Holding a meeting begging him to return and keegan turned him down? These guys are supposedly looking to employ him, not get involved in an unpopular legal battle. I can actually see this issue being a major stumbling block to a return to the club by KK ; a new owner, quite rightly, would NOT want to pick up any tab that KK wanted as Damages, and Ashley will not been keen to pay up unless forced by the Courts... KK has many characteristics, some good, some bad(like us all),and one of these is stubbornness - if he digs his heels in about pursuing this, it could rebound on him. Mr Cleland is the frontman of a South African group thought to be leading the race to buy out Mike Ashley. And today he told the Chronicle he met with Kevin Keegan in Manchester on Monday night and the pair have a “strong mutual interest in working together”. And despite some claims that no official bid for United has been lodged, the Scotland-based South African maintains they made their offer to Seymour Pierce on Tuesday evening after a week of discussions with the firm, which is handling the sale. Mr Cleland would not comment on the size of the bid but it is understood to be in the region of £300m, with £150m upfront and the remainder paid over 12 months. The 46-year-old, who lives between Edinburgh and Glasgow and has made his name developing brands including Coca-Cola, Cadbury’s Schweppes and Whyte and Mackay, said his group are “80% confident” of taking control at St James’s Park. He told how he was impressed by the passion of the Newcastle fans after making a trip to Tyneside and enjoying a drink in Shearer’s bar with Simon Clifford, the man he intends to install as technical director. And if his group of billionaires succeed in getting their hands on the club, Mr Cleland said their chosen manager will be given their full backing, as well as a strong emphasis being placed on youth development. He said: “I am a businessman who happens to be a supporter and the club and the fans deserve better and we are hoping to achieve that. “What we have to do is get the fans to come out and support the club in the coming games in the number and in particular to support the interim manager, who has such a challenge ahead of him. “I would say we are at least 80% confident of this working. We are cautiously optimistic but we are not arrogant.” Mr Cleland said he started pulling together his consortium after Mike Ashley made it clear he planned to sell the club on the back of fans’ protests. He wants to keep the identities and wealth of the men behind the deal secret to avoid being sucked into a bidding war. But those linked previously include prominent South African businessmen Vivian Imerman and Brian Joffe. Reports have identified Keegan as the man they want to install as manager if their takeover is successful and Mr Cleland confirmed he met him on Monday night in Manchester. He said: “My meeting with Kevin went very well. I am hugely impressed with him and I got the sense there was good chemistry between us and there is a strong mutual interest in working together. “He is our preferred option but we cannot make any concrete decisions on the managerial position until negotiations on our planned takeover are further advanced. “I think he understands and supports our concept of developing the club organically.” Mr Cleland said youth development is key to the long-term future of the club, which he why he plans to draft in Clifford, whose Brazilian soccer schools see youngsters coached from the age of six months. But he maintained the manager brought in would still be given their backing in the transfer market. He said: “We will look at every strategy for making the club a success. “One important thing is youth development and we feel that under Simon, who has a proven track record, we can create a great system.” Keegan’s departure from St James’s Park came amid a row over the appointment of Dennis Wise and who was taking the lead on transfer dealings. Mr Cleland says his consortium is determined to avoid such problems. He said: “We would make it very clear that there is a clear hierarchy in place and everybody would fully understand who is calling the shots and who isn’t. “We would not necessarily throw the baby out with the bath water but in any professional organisation, you have to carry out a detailed review of the human capital to establish exactly who has the capabilities you want and who doesn’t. It would be inappropriate to discuss which individuals would stay and which wouldn’t and even at a later stage it would be disrespectful to the brand to pass comment on people.” Mr Cleland visited Newcastle on Tuesday to look around the city and chat to Geordies, none of whom knew who he was. He said: “I did a lot of listening and observing of Newcastle citizens. We listened to conversations about the team and we were interested by what we heard. I was observing how the brand of Newcastle Untied interacts with its customers. “We spent a bit of time in Shearer’s bar, where we had a drink and a nice bite to eat.” He added: “I have been a great Keegan fan all of my life, right from being a teenager, when I supported Liverpool. People are up in arms about HOW he left. The way the board handled the whole situation, the fact that us fans were being lied to. That the manager isnt really in that much control. Thats an excellent point actually, now the club is debt free, you can re-finance it quite easliy. Not sure there is anything concrete to base that fear on just yet but its one to watch. V.C rule of thumb = 3 x revenues = 270m Market valuation of club + debt = 130m Market valuation of club - debt = Whatever the buyer is willing to pay.
