Tony Jimenez leaves the club

It sounds like he's got an offer to work elsewhere (Spurs?) and I would imagine he'll do a decent job in negotiating transfers if the £12m he got for Milner is anything to go by.

Glenn Roeder did a decent job as a caretaker manager, lets bring him back as a caretaker.

I couldn't care less if he does well at Spurs or wherever he goes. He's a nobody at Newcastle.

Did anyone mention bringing Jiminez back?

It seems some people are still confused over what Jiminez really did:

And while any potential purchase of the club looks set to drag on until at least the new year, Jiminez has decided there was no longer any point in wasting time flying around the world to scout players that may never pull on a black and white shirt.

over future

Oct 10 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Tony Jimenez

NEWCASTLE United’s departed vice-president Tony Jimenez is understood to have quit his role on Tyneside because he did not see the point in continuing to scour the globe for talent while the club’s future was in limbo.

The Londoner was at the centre of the storm last month which resulted in Kevin Keegan walking away from his position as manager due to the lack of control over transfers.

And after United fans had made their feelings crystal clear about the situation by unfurling “Cockney Mafia Out” banners at St James’s Park, owner Mike Ashley quickly put the club up for sale on September 14.

Yet as part of the aftermath at St James’s Park, Jimenez subsequently decided there was no longer any point in wasting time flying around the world to scout players that may never even pull on a black-and-white shirt.

A source close to Jimenez told the Chronicle: “Tony just felt there was no point in continuing his position.

“He knows that the club could be sold and, even if it is not, there is the possibility that the club won’t spend money in January with the future so uncertain.

“He is expected to take up another role soon because he wants to continue working in the game.”

There’s no doubt that Jimenez’s departure has received a mixed reaction, but he leaves with a legacy of Jonas Gutierrez, Fabricio Coloccini, Sebastien Bassong, Nacho Gonzalez and Xisco.

It is understood that the chances of United spending similar amounts like they did for players such as £10m defender Coloccini and £5.7m Spanish striker Xisco are slim, and therefore Jimenez believed he had no future at the club.

The whole situation has left Mike Ashley facing a decision. He either has to stick with it at St James’s Park and rethink the structure, or accept less than the £250-300m figure the Toon tycoon is believed to looking for to sell United, with the October 17 deadline for potential buyers quickly coming up.

However, executive director Dennis Wise’s position at the club remains unaffected by his close pal’s departure at United.

It's understandable though - Wise's role was defined on a different basis when he joined and most people seem to think that there was a bit of redfinition on all sides near the end of the window.

That was my point, but as you've just highlighted, most people, yourself included, still don't really know what everyones role was, making some of the abuse hurled at Wise & Co. more than a little baseless.

We certainly don't know exactly what everyone's role was, especially in Wise's case.  However we know that Jimenez was not a scout, its just that the Journal and Gazzette haven't got a clue what they're talking about, big news there then.

How many times do people have to be told this?

Jimenez was the negotiator, and Vetere is the scout. All was made pretty clear by the job titles and their respective CVs where Vetere was a scout for Real Madrid, and Jimenez was a freelance superagent.

So the article was bunkum. He didn't fly around the world sourcing talent, none of that shit. He was simply the negotiator. I thinks you need to write some strongly worded letters to the editors then. :frantic:

I think James is probably right though. Vetere's expertise was always described from the start as mainly being scouting, while Jiminez was the dealmaker. I don't know if there was some overlap, but it's probably just lazy journalism.

Part-time Tony did identify players according to Mort statement at the time:

"Tony's role will be to negotiate deals and to use his contacts, especially in Europe," Mort said. "He will be part-time and will only really work for the club during the two transfer windows. He will identify players, particularly on the youth side, and recommend them to Kevin and Dennis. He will then help negotiate those deals.

"I met him through Mike Ashley who has been friends with him and Paul Kemsley for a long time. They all go to England games at Wembley together. His background is in property but he is also very well connected in football now - he knows a lot of people and he will strengthen us in this area."

I am guessing he used & Football Manager (La Liga Only Version) to spot players & then Jeff went & done the scouting.

It sounds like he's got an offer to work elsewhere (Spurs?) and I would imagine he'll do a decent job in negotiating transfers if the £12m he got for Milner is anything to go by.

Or letting players slip through the net, that'll be handy then if he goes to Spurs.

Shouldn't Spurs have already signed these players on a nudge and a wink to prove that theory then?

Jim will fix it for Ramos

Tottenham hope to strengthen Juande Ramos' position as manager by appointing his ally Tony Jimenez to the White Hart Lane board.

Jimenez, who brokered the deal to take Ramos to Spurs last year, quit his job as Newcastle's player recruitment chief this week and has been lined up to replace the north London club's sporting director Damien Comolli.

Spurs are negotiating Comolli's exit after his disastrous recruiting of players including Darren Bent, Younes Kaboul and Kevin Boateng.

Jimenez, a long-term associate of chairman Daniel Levy, will take over many of the Frenchman's responsibilities - although he will have a different job title.

Levy is determined to stick by Spanish manager Ramos despite the team's failure to win any of their first seven Premier League matches. But Comolli is likely to leave by 'mutual agreement'.

Jimenez, part of the 'Cockney Mafia' loathed by Newcastle fans, had been keen to leave St James' Park ever since owner Mike Ashley put the club up for sale in the wake of Kevin Keegan's departure.

Despite his stormy eight-month spell alongside executive director Dennis Wise at Newcastle, Jimenez is regarded as an excellent transfer-market operator with extensive contacts, especially in Spain.

His arrival at Spurs would also firm up the position of assistant boss Gus Poyet - who is seen as a long-term replacement for Ramos.

Poyet has been friends with Jimenez since his days as a Chelsea player and if the former Seville boss cannot reverse Tottenham's shocking early-season form, Levy would look no further than Poyet as a replacement.

The Uruguayan was offered the chance to take over from Kevin Keegan at Newcastle.

Poyet was tempted by the Toon offer, but stayed at Spurs after Levy told him he was seen as a future manager.

Yet despite Wise's close links with Jimenez and Poyet, the former Leeds manager is determined to stay in his current role as Newcastle's executive director until Ashley sells the club.

I don't see why so many people rate this guy on here, you don't need to be an expert in football to spot two current Argentinean Internationals!! It's not like they've gone and got someone like Zaki who is much less known. The jury is well and truly out on the other buys! Also who ever was responsible for player recruitment wants shooting for not getting in another central midfielder!!

Also goes to show in my opinion the power of spin in our society today! Ashley comes out with this visionary structure when in truth it's no different to Fat Fred's relationship with Paul Stretford the agent who also has extensive contacts throughout the football world! Maybe Fat Fred should have just given Stretford a more fancy title!

Well said. Its all about branding, these days

So as chief negotiator he's probably responsible for Owen not being signed up by now then?

Good riddance.

He's got 12m out of Villa for Milner though, although his negotiation skills only involved the word 'no' (probably knowing about a fuming manager behind his back) and a desperate buyer raising the price to a ridiculous price...
