Why isn't Wise getting more/ continuous grief? The other "scouts" did at least ID some talent. Jonas looks a great buy. What has Wise done talent-wise and why was the only British signing a KK request (Guthrie).

Emile Heskey, knows Owen & we need someone with presence & who will work hard. May not excite everyone or score many goals but he'd be an improvement & you'd expect he'd relish the opportunity to try again with a bigger club and break back into the England squad.

Think about it before you all laugh at Heskey.

At that time I'm sure Heskey would have been available at a good price. I can't see that Wise has earned any of his wages or has contributed anything knowledge wise.

I don't think anyone on here is truly privy to exactly what he has or hasn't done. His track record here doesn't look too impressive with that said.

Wasn't wise just charged with bringing in 5 youth players per year? Sure I read that somewhere. In that respect he seems to have done fairly well with the likes of Ranger, kadar, Tozer, Zamblera, and Spear. Though guess we can't really tell until any of them are ready for the first team.

That was said, but events suggest otherwise.

I’ll reserve judgement on Jimenez as I don’t know how good a job he did for us although his credentials are certainly impressive; I was however disappointed that it wasn’t Wise that was going as his credentials certainly don’t merit the ludicrous salary he’s on.  Fair enough if he unearths several great players for next to no money as the Arsenal scouting system regularly does but his CV since retiring as a player (very effective player granted) does not warrant his 4 year deal on £3m a year!  As this is a new role for him at the biggest club he’s been at since his playing days (so we don’t know if he’s going to do a good job or not) surely it would have been a better idea to have a sort of performance related pay system, rather than paying him £60k a week for him to swan around London and refusing to move to the North East!  Where’s the incentives for him?  Despicable little bloke; that he beat up an OAP speaks volumes about him!  Unfortunately it looks like we’re stuck with him for several years !

Apart from his credentials in the private sector - property/property development - his football CV is rather thin. Being an executive director of a London-based football player agency doesn't warrant the sort of Galacticos 'recruiter' status some have bestowed upon him.

Just back from holiday hence the long delay in responding; anyway  hands up it’s a fair cop, I must admit to rather gullibly believing what someone said regarding TJ’s previous employments and on now doing some research it would appear that he was anything but qualified in respect of his position at NUFC.  With this in mind its more than likely a good thing he has gone.

When did the club publish the salary details then?

Several people have mentioned that figure but it may not be gospel; indeed I’d very much like to think I was incorrect in the sum mentioned as it would be a staggering figure (even in the hyper-inflated  football world) to guarantee someone in an entirely new post over several years.  I obviously hope beyond hope he is doing a great job behind the scenes but its akin to asking someone who lives in the real world to start believing that gods exist. It’s a leap of faith too far to think the little runt is pulling off miracles in his retreat in the smoke!  Surely his contract at the very least should have obligated him to relocate to the North East!?

What he done before he came here is irrelevant anyway, in his short time here he's negotiated some quality deals for the club including getting what looks like a top class Argenitian International to sign for us on a free and to pull off a £12 million deal for an average player like Milner.

Loving the Villa supporters kicking off over Milner, and I'm finding it difficult to fault any of his signings. Not a dud amongst them so far, in fact they have all been bloody good and great value for money.

/much better than the mostly misses Keegan brought in for City.

The Milner price was very good work. But we won't know what Jonas cost us until February I think.  None of us knows enough about what Jimenez did or didn't do and whether he's a loss or not. I'd like to know more about what happened during the final days of the transfer window and why it went so very wrong before I pass any judgement on any of the people involved.

I am always wondering what skills were needed to "negotiate" the Milner deal. All they had to do was to wait until Villa offered obscene money so that they felt the deal was too good to refuse. We will see what comes of with the signing of Jonas, at the moment certainly not a bad deal. On the other hand we weren't able to agree terms for quite a lot of signings I'd say - not only for good players, but also losing out for the likes of Vokes who rather opted for inferior players.

I would say the likes of Vokes were down to Wise as he was the one responsible for bringing the young lads like Spears here, I don't blame him if he preferred to go to Wolves over us though as there's a chance he'd just get swallowed up at this club, similar to why Darren Bent preferred to go to Charlton instead of coming here a few years back.

Not sure who we missed out on altogether so I can't pass judgement on that, it seems that some people (not you btw) blame the likes of Jimenez for not filling every single position that we needed to fill yet also blame Ashley for not being prepared to pump money into the club for transfers, surely it's either one or the other? If Ashley wasn't prepared to put money into the club then Jimenez should be applauded for the work he done on a limited budget.

This view that all Jiminez had to do was wait until Villa offered an obscene amount of money is coloured by hindsight a bit though isn't it? Jiminez could quite easily have taken £8m and not many here would have argued it was too low. Keegan himself only valued Milner at £7-8m allegedly. You can't knock a dealmaker who ramps the price up to £12m when he could easily have settled for far less.

The £4m fee we agreed with Stoke for Shola was canny business as well even if fell through in the end.

I blame them all - including Keegan - not knowing what actually went on. We probably made some decent signings although the jury on most of them is still out. We will see what they are worth later. What I do know is that we have gone into a season with a squad that is nowhere near of good enough in depths and strengths to push for a decent league position but rather will leave us struggling. That is down to the whole recruitment team. One cheap Argentinian player doesn't make the effort acceptable. Even with a restricted budget they should have done better.

These kind of deals are still rather down to the stupidity of the bidders than the prudence of the seller imho. That has nothing to do with hindsight. You don't need a genius to do it. Not selling Milner for a lower fee was very much down to the fact that it was a risk to reduce the size of an already depleted squad. Brokering an unlikely deal for complicated terms would have to be deemed as good work of a negotiator but not a deal that is just down to the amount of money thrown at the seller.

What I meant was I'm surprised the bar was set so high for Milner with us being a "selling" club. Personally I'd have snapped their hands off at £10m. Either he was for sale or he wasn't, and the fact he went for £12m shows he was, depleted squad or not.

Anyway this brings other factors into the equation which might have affected the thinking at the time. There was talk that we had Malouda for £12m lined up as a replacement if Milner was sold but obviously City hijacking the Robinho signing from Chelsea at the last minute would have scuppered that if true. Skjelbred was also lined up but that fell through again reportedly because Keegan pulled the plug.

There are too many things that don't add up in last transfer window. Maybe Keegan pulled the plug on Skjelbred (though all we have is a story from Alan "Brett Emerton will be a Newcastle player at the end of the week" Oliver that isn't backed up by any quotes in it). Though it is a bit strange with the directors apparently having no problems to overrule Keegan in other transfers (and remember it's a FACT that they were allowed to).

All I know is that we went into the season with a squad that wasn't strengthened in the way it needed to be. I really think everybody has to face his fair share of blame. But one person took the personal consequences. So I am really sceptical about those who pretended everything was going well, because it certainly wasn't.

In the end Jiminenez was responsible for finalising deals both ways. Maybe getting 12m for Milner was some decent work. But even if he had personally been responsible to push the price to 35m then it wouldn't cover the mistakes in not helping the manager to assamble a squad that is capable of doing a good job in the premierleague. And that isn't depending on one or two failed deals at transfer deadline. And if they failed then it stills falls down into the responsibility of those being in charge of finalising transfers. So I really am puzzled about people saying Jiminez has done a good job.

In broad terms th window was a complete fuck up...We are beginning to realise Xisco is average, the other bloke can't get in the first team and we might end up  paying 8m for Guti. Colo was a good signing (as was Guti) but the squad is still threadbare and the midfield still very average in the middle. Let's hope we get out of the bottom three soon.

When you say one person took the final consequences are you talking about Keegan or Ashley? Because it's easy to say let's sign Beckham, Rooney and Ronaldo for example. All of these would improve the squad no doubt at a price. At the end of the day someone has to pay the bills and generally can't walk away from the situation so has to look at the longer term situation.

I think a decent squad improvement (+5/6 places worth) for a reasonable outlay was all that most fans expected - as Isegrim says that didn't happen.

Possibly but isn't the whole point of this wonderful structure to build a squad and club which achieves its target regardless of managerial comings and goings?

If thats the case that presumes a replacement for Keegan (sale aside) who is is equal in motivating an average squad as well as he is - I'm not convinced any would have been available/willing to work with this structure.

Oh FFS.  Honestly NJS.  "Managerial comings and goings" is a ridiculous bit of semantic play to try and apply to this situation just to beat up on the "structure".  Unless you genuinely believe the spirit and intent of such a structure is one that would be immune from ill effects even if it changed managers every two weeks.

Which of course it isn't.  No structure is.  Just as no structure is equipped to handle the shitstorm of a cult icon manager walking out in a huff at the end of a summer transfer window.  DoF or not we'd be in the same shape right now.
