And should follow the lead of their opponents tomorrow — Aston Villa — by surrounding their prize asset with hungry players bought from Championship clubs. Although Kinnear is not confident of still being at United at the turn of the year, he has urged current owner Mike Ashley, or would-be buyers of the club, NOT to cash in on Owen, pictured right, during the next transfer window. With the striker free to speak to other clubs in January and arrange a free transfer for when his contract expires next summer, selling him for a knock-down price in the New Year remains an option for Newcastle. And I understand new Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has already expressed an interest in taking Owen to White Hart Lane. But Kinnear maintains Owen should be offered a new deal at St James’s Park, then have new domestic signings — from outside the Premier League — bedded in around him. “I think the club has to keep Michael Owen and players like him. This is a big club and Michael is a big player. “It will cost a lot of money to replace him. I would keep him here. I feel the same way as Kevin Keegan about him. “I don’t know the economics of what is happening — I think that will be addressed — but I would keep Michael here.” Although his own future remains up in the air, Kinnear has begun drawing up his own recommended list of January transfer targets. The interim manager would be reluctant to keep the job on a month-by-month basis beyond the end of the year, saying: “To do it that way until the end of the season would be a bit harsh on me. I’d certainly do it until Christmas, then look at it again.” But the protracted nature of owner Mike Ashley’s search for a new buyer has raised the prospect of Kinnear being kept on in the longer term, perhaps until the end of the season. And it’s a scenario the former Wimbledon manager is already planning for — by going window shopping in the Championship . . . after shipping out members of Newcastle’s foreign legion. Initially, Kinnear would look to raise his own funds, saying: “I’d look to put one out in Spain and invest that money wisely, then put another out somewhere else, and invest that money wisely. “I’d maybe get three or four players out and two back in. The two might be better than the three or four. “All I could do then is put a list to Mike (Ashley), and say: ‘Look, I’ve generated funds, but we need two more players in.’ “You pay too much money abroad. But if you go the Championship way . . . well, look at Aston Villa, they’re fourth in the league. There are plenty of decent players in the Championship.” And Kinnear’s talent search is already in full swing. “I am here until 6pm every day and speak four hours on the phone to everybody I know in the game — lots of chief scouts,” he added. “Around 20 or 30 of them used to play for me! “I speak to them all the time and pick their brains, asking: ‘Who have you seen?’ “We are getting a tidy list of players together — a mixed bag, with quite a few youngsters and other, more proven ones, more or less all playing in the Championship. “Obviously, we are in trouble if we have injuries, and in trouble if we lose our full-backs. The underbelly of the club at the minute needs to be slightly stronger.” Worrying!
Guest Stephen927
Maybe his time would be better spent thinking up a way of getting us a result against Villa.

Guest BooBoo
So he's on about selling a player to a Spanish club. I would have thought h'es referring to Xisco or Enrique.
LoveItIfWeBeatU
Good luck keeping Owen, Joe When he tells Owen his plans of surrounding him with Championship players I'm sure Owen will quick to sign.

Guest Stephen927
In short, Ashley has told him he's working on a shoestring budget.
Doug
Anyone who thinks Michael Owen is going to stay with us now probably should also believe in Santa claus and the tooth fairy too because there is more chance of the last two being true

I would guess Owen will stay to the end of the season as then it's entirely his choice where he goes.
Parsley
Very worrying. Making the squad even smaller is just going to make things worse and youngsters are not the sort of player you need who can change the course of a relegation battle imo. It looks like a complete and utter mess if I'm honest.

Decky
We're fucking doomed if Kinnear is here in January
Ronaldo
stupid cunt. You'd pay more for a player in the championship than in La Liga tbh
dcmk
Don't worry people Nile Ranger is in our books
Guest BooBoo
Which Championship players have Villa actually bought? Curtis Davies is the only one that i can think of. The likes of A Young, L Young, Shorey, Milner, Friedel, Sidwell, Harewood were all bought from at the time Premier League teams (or very recently relegated Premier League teams). Not really sure where's he got this idea from.
Robster
stupid cunt. You'd pay more for a player in the championship than in La Liga tbh Ah but this is how astute our wonderful management are. Dare I say, they are already preparing the club for next season, and getting the salary structure in place

Guest Stephen927
Out of the current Aston Villa squad, only Davies was brought in from a Championship side, after a season in the Premiership. "I’d maybe get three or four players out and two back in. The two might be better than the three or four." So, make our squad even smaller then? Owen, N'Zogbia and Enrique are my bets to go. JH
3 or 4 out, 2 in? Do people not understand that we have a fucking paper thin squad

Not really sure where's he got this idea from. I was thinking that as well. Clueless. The idea that you pay more abroad is so far out of touch with the modern game it's staggering. As soon as any young player shows any promise whatsoever at that level, it's an immediate bumper price tag - Walcott, Ramsey, Bale, Chopra.
LoveItIfWeBeatU
Kinnear has already said that he hopes Mike Ashley doesn't sell because he will then, more than likely, be out of a job. Joe's comments above make me even keener for Ashley to sell as soon as possible!
Robster
I apologise for saying this but I feel I have to say.... "But of course it was all Keegans fault" No need I know but its just going from one fucking disaster to another.
Guest firetotheworks
Why does he think he has the right to sell our players? If he's thinking of selling Enrique, Xisco or Gonzalez I dont think he should be allowed, we spent a lot of money on them and I doubt we'd get a return, not because theyre shit, just because 2 of them never start. Its like a substitute teacher trying to expel a student that he's known for 4 lessons, the headmaster would tell the teacher to fuck off.
