Mido chants to be investigated by the FA

The chant does not say he looks like someone.

Or am I wrong? Let's look at it:

"Mido he's got a bomb you know"

Nope. Nothing at all about Mido resembling some other person.

OK, I don't see any Racism in that.

It's interpreted, quite understandably, as the negative stereotype which says muslims = terrorists.

Racism is the wrong word because Islam isn't a "race", but it's the same kind of bigotry: taking a negative characteristic from one or some and applying it to all members of a human category.

"All them blacks/Jews/Muslims is lazy/miserly/terrorists."

Why weren't the Newcastle fans singing it at Tuncay?

Yeah, great excuse. "It can't be prejudice because it was only directed at one guy."

"All them Muslims is terrorists apart from that one over there with the long hair and that one at right back for Newcastle and what religion is the black fella up front for us, anyone know?"

And why do you think it was directed at one guy, and one guy only.

Could it possibly be the fact that (pre-haircut) he had a passing resemblence to a Mr Richard Reid, something that had already been picked up by other football club supporters and the press?

You can chunder on about Richard Reid to your heart's content, but anyone looking at this is going to deal with the words that were actually said.

I guess that they could claim Incitement to Religious Hatred but I doubt that could be proven when looking at the chant.

I'm afraid I'm not well-versed in the legalities, but I'm sure it doesn't just have to be about "race" to count as hate speech. Jews aren't a "race" but that doesn't mean that prejudice against them doesn't exist or doesn't matter.

I think you'll find Jews are a race.

Fuck knows how these morons think.

But if they hadn't realised after last year that the chant would cause this kind of trouble, then they deserve what they get. I've got no sympathy for any knuckle-dragger who brings the club into this kind of disrepute.

I just can't bellieve that no-one picked up on our past racist bile hurled at Jimmy Floyd, after all 'Just a fat Eddie Murphy' was obviously thrown his way because he is black and so is Eddie Murphy.

On a more serious note, regardless of the nature of the chanting it is close to the bone for a lot of people and its no surprise that some quarters have lumped it as being racist, I'd wager that (giving the benefit of doubt to the songs creator) the original target was his likeness to RR, but a number of fans were chanting it thinking that it was aimed at him being an 'arab' (that seems to be the term banded about by borderline racists for anyone not from Britain these days).

Unfortunately we can't do anything about these individuals unless you can identify them all indivudally. Until then maybe the song should be shelved for the greater good?

After the fuss made last year I'd be amazed if anyone was unaware that it get dredged up again if the bomb chants were repeated. That's why I don't accept it was innocent banter, at best it was downright stupid everything considered, which is why I don't see the need to bend over backwards defending such daft actions.

Have a long hard look at the people who caused the 'fuss'.

Wwheeessss keeeeeyyyyyssss Louise from the guardian?

Correct both times.

Certain people with agendas as well as the usually 'outraged about something, life isn't fair' smoggies.

Nothing happened then, nothing will happen now, because people know that it is a storm in a teacup. Even Southgate has said as much.

Even if that's the case, the fact is it has been reported broadly by the press and not just one agenda driven journalist. Wether anything comes of it or not, it hardly reflects well on us as a club to be associated with this stuff two seasons running. That's the reason I can't understand all this defensive excuse making for a few plebs who should know better.

Give over Tron. In a few days it'll become yesterdays news. Give in to them and you're giving in to the plebs like Taylor and the PC brainwashed morons.

Its terrace chanting and its designed to piss them off, its always happened and always will. The smoggies used to sing at Mick Quinn "you're just a fat Geordie Bastard", even though he's a scouser. Was he bothered ? Don't be daft.

Back then football wasn't a global game. I'm sure if we were a small townclub like Sunderland I wouldn't have any concern about the image we send out as no one south of Chester le Street would be watching. We are though, as you would say, an ambitious club with a bigger following worldwide. That's why this crap being in the spotlight for the second year running is pissing me off.

Unless you are trying to wind up any mackem WUM's  on here - and I can't see any apart from mandiarse - the very fact that you see sunderland as a small townclub is nailed on proof of the higher expectation that you have of NUFC, which has only came about since 1992.

Now that we have changed our ownership, is it beyond your notice that things between us and the mackems have evened up slightly or not ?

As for this "racism" and "spotlight" bollocks, one thing you have to realise is that a lot of these southern journos know that we are or should be a serious threat to their own darlings ie the cockney manu and liverpool fans in particular - and are quite happy to run us down at any opportunity. They will find something to do it, anything they can, as often as possible, and the saddest thing is the amount of NUFC supporters who fall for this, interpreting a handful of these idiotic journos and another handful of idiots who post on message board and ring into phone ins, as a sign that the "whole country is laughing at us" when the opposite is the case. Most of the country is jealous as fuck of the european qualifictions we have had in the last 15 years.

These people are not representative of the support of other clubs and instead of taking it all to heart you should get some backbone and see them for what they are.

Make your mind up, are you up in arms because you think its racist, or because of the impact it had last season?

Mountain out of a molehill this, similarities with Brand/Ross v Sachs, ambulance chasers out in force.

have you emailed your views to your London journo to do a piece on dragging the club down ?

The club has already emailed its views to Cockney journos....

"Newcastle United will not tolerate any form of racist behaviour and will continue to work closely with the authorities and anti-racism organisations to rid sport and society of racism.

"The Club condemns any form of racist chanting and any individual found guilty of such an offence will be banned from St. James' Park."

Why is it that some people wwill do anything to go against mainstream opinion?

Because the mainstream opinion is not always the right opinion. For example, most people think Gordon Brown is not at fault for our problems, apparently.

This has been completely thrown out of proportion, partly as a result of Mido's childish cries of racism.

It's not, but some people no matter what point there is, decide to go against it.

I'm not going to discuss another thread with you on this one, but you are spot on with the bit in bold.

Yeah, amazing that the club would release a statement so far adrift from mainstream opinion.

Does the statement say that the chant against Mido was racist, in fact does it specify any match?

No, the club statement is a reiteration of the clubs anti-racism policy.

Fines but no banning orders for 'racist' chanting.

FATHER and son Toon fans have appeared in court over the alleged racist abuse of a footballer.

Barry Norman Hutchinson, 49, of Silver Lonnen, Fenham, Newcastle, and his son, Andrew, 23, reportedly chanted racial abuse at Middlesbroughs Egyptian striker, Mido.

The offence was alleged to have happened during the Middlesbrough vs Newcastle game on November 29 but Andrew Hutchinson denied the charge.

Hutchinson senior was fined £270, with £45 costs, after admitting the offence.

Chair of the Teesside magistrates bench, Eric Toulims, said: Middlesbrough have zero-tolerance of racist abuse.

He added that magistrates considered imposing a banning order, but decided against it.

Magistrates heard Hutchinson Senior, a Toon season ticket holder for the last 20 years, joined in with the chants after mishearing the lyrics.

He thought the song referred to Mido having a ball as opposed to a bomb, explained his lawyer, Chris Marley.

Fellow fans told him the chant implied Mido was a Muslim terrorist and he joined in, the court heard. Hutchinson, a yard supervisor, was then arrested.

Hutchinson, who has never been in trouble before, co-operated with police.

Mr Marley added: It was utterly out of character.

Urging magistrates not to impose a banning order, which would bar Hutchinson from every ground in the country, he said: This is a man who has followed Newcastle for more than 40 years.

The court was also told the defendant fears the episode could cost him his job.

Hutchinson tried to hide his face at Teesside Magistrates Court after being sentenced.

He admitted chanting Mido, he has a bomb you know and Mido, hes a paedo at the Riverside Stadium, the court heard.

The pair appeared in court yesterday charged with racist or obscene chanting, under the Football Offences Act of 1991.

Hutchinson senior works for Leaseway Vehicle Rental, Gateshead. A spokeswoman for the firm said she had no comment.

It is alleged that a minority of the 3,000 United supporters at the game subjected Mido to abuse.

This is the second time he has claimed to have been abused. Similar shouting at the Riverside a year ago sparked a campaign by Tyneside-based charity Show Racism the Red Card.

A Middlesbrough FC spokesman said: We will not hesitate to ban supporters identified as directing racial abuse.

Hutchinsons son, Andrew, who lives with his dad, will be tried at a later date.

So, make a note for next season - it appears its fine to call Mido a Paedo, but dont say he's got a Bomb, and you know.
