Not sure where I read it, quite probably on this forum, but some were saying Clark being dropped for Batty was just a big factor (or bigger) than the Tino signing as to why we didn't win the league.

Remember lots of stories about Jamie Burt when I was growing up. Apparently a hell of a talent who outshone Michael Owen at school boy level.

Yeah he went down the wrong path unfortunately at 15 after playing for England.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We all have 20-20 hindsight but I agree with this line of thinking, Batty added more defensive solidity, but we lost a lot of creativity when Clarky was left out

one of me best mates is from blyth and there's one or two "Burty" stories he tells.

I've said it before but all the Bedlington lads of my vintage, who played to a decent level, single Jamie out as the best they’ve ever shared a pitch with by a large margin. And given how good some of those were, that’s no mean feat. Alex "Disco" Lawson, will rave about him any chance he gets

Just took much longer to get the ball forward. Batty was brilliant at what he did, however a consequence of that was me often sitting thinking stuff like: ‘have they (opposition) got all their players back behind the ball? Nope not quite yet, any second now, ok now he releases it.’ Felt like what we gained in solidity we lost in rapid attacks.

Alex Lawson was a canny player aswell back in the day.

His dad was a great man too.

Is Jamie your brother, mate?

I'm sure he made a comeback in the fa cup on the telly years ago and it was quite a big local story at the time.

Tino and Batty always seem to be the scapegoats but Ferdinand went to shit the last third of the season, Rob Lee too, Ginola wasn't the same after the Dixon sending-off. Plus Schmeichel & Cantona started to win games 1-0 on their own.

Why? Ours not good enough?

Just left hasn’t he? Would be an ideal fit to bring the players through IMO.

I’ll have mentioned this before; I played Centre Forward for a Sunday League side from Houghton Le Spring. The “manager” was the Commercial Manager for NUFC, our strips were the previous season 1st team strips and we played a couple of games at Benwell.

I scored a hat trick on my debut at Benwell in Micky Quinn’s no 9 strip but the hi-light of the game was when we all stood still and watched a player on the pitch next to us effortlessly dribble past 5 or 6 players. It was Lee Clark, as said, if he’d had a turn of foot (and a little bigger) he had the potential to be really top level.

What makes Clark qualified to be trusted with our promising youth players?
