Match Report

Why?

Why did we allow ourselves to be lulled into the naïve belief that confidence was permissible after Thursday? Why did Roeder look at a side that had gained easily our best result of the season and see fit to make six changes? Why was there a crushing inevitability about the ‘decision’? Why take the ‘soft’ option and drop Taylor and Ramage for Babayaro and ‘honest pro’ Stevie Carr? Why was the only contribution I witnessed from the latter a foul-mouthed tirade at a ball boy? Why are we always on average six inches smaller than any team we play? Why do we have no fight, no heart and no guile to break down teams that show the Premiership up for the garbage that it really is? Why are we no better (let’s stop kidding ourselves) than Sheffield United, Charlton or Middlesbrough?

Why did we create nothing whatsoever for the first half? Why did we do the impossible and get even worse in the second? Why did we have not one chance, not one moment of excitement in the entire game? Why are we getting beat off the dross of the league at home? Why was Milner shamefully taken off despite looking like the only one that gave a toss? Why was Duff left on instead? Why was Duff bought? Why was Emre fit enough to play a full game on Thursday and be on the bench today and yet not fit to start? Why wouldn’t you just think ‘Fuck them’ if you were Albert Luque, or Steven Taylor or Peter Ramage or (and I can’t believe I’m actually saying these words) if you were taken off ahead of the stupifyingly inept Scotty Parker (God, this is going to hurt) - Nicky Butt? Why, if you were Alex Ferguson, would you let Guiseppe Rossi stay one minute longer in this car crash? Why was a kid who had the game of his life and brought a glow to our hearts with his hopelessly misplaced unbelievable post match interview that had us grinning from ear to ear dumped out of the squad today?

Why couldn’t the players see the heartbreaking support pouring out in the second half and do something to even come close to deserving it? Why was this game played today after a few hundred grand was dangled in front of the board, regardless of the detriment to the team? Why does the man who is supposed to be running our club think that this is a good time for a jolly little break in Mallorca? Why do certain players at our club think it is acceptable to carry themselves in a frankly disgraceful manner off the pitch (no names, draw your own opinions)? Why do we look to the bench and see a joke of a coaching team headed by a failure of a manager? Why don’t the local press do their duty and tell the truth about NUFC? Why isn’t the utter revulsion of Shepherd being reported? Why has this happened?

Why did my Dad walk out before the end for the first time in 50 years of supporting NUFC?

Why don’t you just fuck off Shepherd and take Roeder with you?

Shepherd Out! Keep the Faith – You can have both!

As this dark episode in the history of Newcastle United reached its painful denouement, a full moon illuminated the Tyneside sky, but it is the elusive light at the end of the tunnel which Magpies' supporters crave most.

An increasing number of fans fervently believe that a brighter future can only be achieved once their club emerge from the foreboding shadow of their larger-than-life chairman, Freddy Shepherd. More than 1,000 of the most vocal confirmed as much long after the dust had settled on this disastrous result and only the presence of mounted police prevented a tense situation turning nasty.

It is understood that Shepherd will return from a short break in Spain this week after missing what his manager, Glenn Roeder, correctly described as the worst performance of his nine-month tenure.

In the mean time, attention will inevitably focus on the future of Roeder and it is deeply ironic that a trip to Manchester City is the next Premiership test facing a coach desperately clinging to a post he initially shunned. It was immediately following February's listless 3-0 defeat at Eastlands that Graeme Souness, the previous Newcastle manager, was summarily dismissed by Shepherd. If tomorrow night's Carling Cup tie at Watford is seen as a mere distraction, only a win will suffice against City on Saturday. Anything less and heads - or at least one head - will surely roll.

For Keith Gillespie, the former Newcastle winger who returned to St James' Park with Sheffield United, the rapid decline in the club's fortunes must appear especially dramatic. "It's a crying shame," he said after Danny Webber's 68th minute goal, Sheffield United's first away from home in the League this season, sentenced Newcastle to a seventh Premiership defeat.

"When Kevin Keegan was manager we played entertaining football," Gillespie added, "but they've failed to do that since. I can understand the fans' frustrations because they're down near the bottom of the League."

Roeder, to his credit, is refusing to hide at a time when his normally vocal chairman is proving conspicuous by his absence. "That performance has to be a one-off," he said after Sheffield United's fully deserved victory. "It was as bad as anything the fans have seen since I took charge. It is my responsibility to achieve better results." Failure to do so at Manchester City and Roeder may find that responsibility is taken out of his hands.

Sheffield United (4-4-2): Kenny; Kozluk, Jagielka, Davis, Geary; Gillespie, Montgomery, Leigertwood, Quinn (Law, 90); Webber (Kabba, 72; Kazim-Richards, 88), Hulse. Substitutes not used: Bennett (gk), Short.

So, we've played the two worst teams in the league (apart from ourselves) at home over the last two weekends and we've come away with 1 point, having scored precisely zero goals.

Genuinely find that hard to believe.  I am questioning reality.

We have scored the same amount of goals as Kanu in the premiership this season!  bluesigh.gif

Villa have had as many pens as we've scored goals.

Rob -  Roeder is playing to stay in both Cup competion's for as long as possible.  He picks his best player formation and more importantly those players give a bit extra than in a lower EPL game.  On that basis we should beat Watford.

Not yet.  He is playing a dangerous game if he cannot motive his team to treat every game as though it was a Cup game.    There are worse teams that us, who sadly are improving and we are lacking confidence from a manager who stands with his arms folded on the touch-line.

There is currently ONE team worse than us.

He has put us in this postion. He is unable to buy or coach players up to the task. Simple as.

What did Robson say, you do not win anything in September.  Well it is only November and the same thing must apply.  You are right, one below us.  Just feel a win tomorrow would be a starting step for us and I just hope it can he achieved.

Yeah, like the Pompey game was.

There is NO way back with Roeder, he's worse than clueless.

As for the November thing, we have been awful this season. If you think that is acceptable, fair enough, but its not good enough for a manager to rely on "hopefully" making things better for the 2nd half of the season, which is getting nearer and nearer.

Northern Monkey - It is not acceptable and Roeder is poor.  The players have not played up to anywhere near their best on more than a few occasions and must take some blame as well.
