Incognito
At the very highest level Gerrard is poor defensively in that role. He doesn't have the legs and he doesn't have the DM's mindset (as exampled by Villa's counter attack goal). Henderson's never a holding player either. Neither Lampard or Gerrard have ever proven world class for England. Lampard's been to 2 world cups and has never scored a goal. With his legs gone is he going to score now? Once again he's not a DM either. If we are going there to try and control games maybe a Carrik/Gerrard partnership might work. But I doubt it At this rate I truly reckon we will get carved open straight down the middle. IMO I thought our CM's did very well against L'pool and there will be better players England will face in those positios come June. That's possibly the worst argument I've ever seen on this forum. The College Dropout
You seem to be dismissing everyone. We do have to take players, CD? We all know England's chances are very bleak and options are limited with not much class around but we have to take a group. I'm interested in your pool of midfielders now your sticking up for Barry but dismissing Henderson/Lampard etc. I'm not dismissing any of them. But none of them are any great shakes either. That's just my point. I would have retired Gerrard/Lampard/Barry etc. long time. Since we haven't and the younger players don't have much experience, I would just pick the best players in the best form come June. That might mean Barry, that might mean Henderson. The general ability levels for England won't be drastic.

The College Dropout
Yes and Gareth Barry has been as good as anyone. Least alone Frank Lampard.

I know football is a game of opinion and even as someone who isn't a Lampard fan, I find that preposterous.

The College Dropout
Lampard looked every bit the 35 year old when we beat them. I think finally his engine is beginning to seriously wane.

That's twice you've voiced your opinion of a player by how they've fared against us. Ludicrous argument honestly.
The College Dropout
He hasn't impressed whenever I've seen him. In the big matches David Luiz is getting the nod over him at CM. And they've just bought someone to play in his position.

And they've just bought someone to play in his position. It helps when a club can actively seek someone from around the world to replace their 35 year old midfielder. Roy Hodgson unfortunately only has a selected pool of players to choose from in which Lampard is still high on the list, and rightly so as even at 35, he's still better than the majority. Mole_Toonfan
I don't know where this argument stemmed from and what it's all about and really don't want to bother either. But if this seasons form is any indication, i'd take Barry to the WC. He's probably the best player we have as far as being an intelligent sitter in front of the back 4 and distributing along with Carrick. I don't think i'd start him but i'd take him on the plane. Trumpet
Haven't seen too much of Walker under Sherwood, has he improved ? GJohnson is having his worst season in years, and in my opinion doesn't even deserve the make the 23 men squad. Would be nice if Clyne gets a chance vs. Denmark in March. Having said that, if not Walker, someone like Smalling/Jones will probably start at RB in place of a natural right back.
BrettNUFC
If you take Barry, you don't take Carrick, but for me i'd have Carrick all day along ahead of Barry. Not that i rate either of them but you've got to have one because we simply have nobody else for that position. Don't say the point in wasting two places on them both, would very negative and short sighted.
