Joey Barton (now retired)

Aye, wants stability for his bairn. What a c***, sell.

The difference in that one year extra he wanted(when he would be in Smith's position or not far off) is his choice though, 3 years would have been a great deal for him. We cant give an extra year for him just for being a father soon given how much he has done off the pitch early on here that we supported.

Oh and agree with Dave about how much he has turned it around after the Joey Barton of 2/3 years ago.

stability ? pile of s**** really. find out where you want to bring your kid up, contact the nearest prem club and adjust your wage demands to get the move. i'm fairly sure even if he packed in tomorrow he'd ever have to work again .

who on here wouldn't take their kid to a new school every 2 or 3 years if they were to get 30kpw for it ?

Sounds like he's settled in the NE tbh. Footballers can be human too.

It's 4 or 5 years before this unborn kid starts school anyway so its not really an issue in that respect.

To be fair, at the talk in charity dinner, Barton said after he stops playing football this is where he'll end up (the NE) as he loves it.

And it's one of the few places in the UK he can show his face without being abused or attacked, win-win situation.

Newcastle dont think I can play past 29[

I see those clowns still think they know one or two things about football. f***ing idiots.

Interesting spin on it by Barton mind considering we offered a two-year extension, didn't we? Suggests to me that the club aren't convinced he be good enough/needed after 31, not 29.

I'm pretty sure we don't think Barton can't play past 29, we just aren't going to be offering big contracts to people much past that age.

i'd like to see us change our policy for colo mind, i think he's got years in him yet

The problem with him, as with Barton & Nolan, is going to be the wage/contract length. If he's prepared to come down to £50-55k in line with our new signings, I don't see it being an issue.

Yeah, I hope it's not so concrete that it can never be flexed. Although I guess Colo will have to take a pay cut as well when his time comes.

CBs can peak later TBF, so we might realise he is worth keeping.

Fair play to him I'm sure he does love it, but we have got rid of other players who loved it here as well because the football comes first. Joey should have signed the contract when he had the chance but now we've moved on. I'm sure he could still stay mind if his cunt of an agent was prepared to lower his demands.

Joey Barton says he is just "a pawn" at Newcastle - and that the club refused him even a 1pm pay rise.

The controversial midfielder, whose contract is up at the end of next season, told Talksport: "I don’t want to go, but that’s football. The clubs are the ones with the power and we’re just employees. If the football club wants a change of direction then the players are used as pawns and moved on or pushed out.

"I believe in my ability and if Newcastle don’t think I’ll play past 29 then more fool them and I’ll go and ply my trade elsewhere

Barton said he attempted to broker a new deal earlier this year "but I got a call saying there would be no negotiation. I was told they weren’t going to offer even 1p a week more. I was a bit taken aback. but that’s football. I believe in my ability and if Newcastle don’t think I’ll play past 29 then more fool them and I’ll go and ply my trade elsewhere."

The former Manchester City and England man said he would do his best for Newcastle in the 2011/12 season but expected to quit at the end of the campaign.

He said: “I’d be very surprised if I leave this summer. I’ve had a few phone calls about interest and would I go here, or do that. That’s the nature of the game.

“Unless someone can offer me the opportunity to play at the next level, and that’s the Champions League, I won’t be leaving the club.”

Didn't he realise he was never going to get a pay rise? I would have though the negotiations would be about the size of the pay cut.

He agreed to a pay cut.  The problem is the length of the contract.

Fair enough, the headline talks about not getting a pay rise... on closer inspection the quotes don't even mention it.

Does he think he'll get that next summer either though?

Barton still hasn't answered why he rejected a new contract in late January.  If you refuse a contract you can't expect another one to be on the table when you feel like it.  Again many fans are brought into what he says as they think like that, he's just playing the fans as every player, manager etc does.

Well, I wasn't at them so I'm I supposed to read his mind?!?  The only thing I heard from those talk-in's was that he said Ben Arfa would be leaving which again is a load of shite from his mouth.

Sorry, I wasn't saying he gave the answer at the talk-ins, just that he confirmed (at them) that he had already rejected a contract offer.
