Guest BooBoo
The Sunday Times isnt really a paper to print transfer twaddle. Bizarrely, there may be something in the story.

Guest Roger Kint
I find it crazy, its not like he will be a donkey by then and also we could get a mill or so for him from a say newly promoted club when he has a year or so left on his contract. Am sure the club thought similar when they gave Alan Smith a 5 year deal Yeah maybe but Joey won't be on £80k per week like that greedy little Leeds b******. All reports have them on the same wages, god only knows how you can try and add £20K to Smith's. By your logic if Barton stays to pick up the last 2 years of his next deal while not being picked will he become a greedy bastard as well by default? Both have 1 year left, my point was if Joey signed a 5 year deal now and he sat in the stands taking our money for the final 2 would you call him a greedy bastard? No way on earth is Smith on 80k man, theres a massive diference between the club wanting Smiths deal to end and Joey getting an extension, you reckon he would take a lower wage without extra years on top as thats the only way you can use it in this case? Smith has been told to find a club we all know he won't he has no interest is leaving... I would not give Joey 5 years, 4 yes.. then we have him for 3 and maybe can get a little cash back. I think as a player Joey would rather be playing than do a Smith and just hang around not getting games.

Smith is doing nothing different to Barton in this case, he knows he is backup as he has been for about 18 months(when fit) so is simply doing the job asked of him. As for getting cash for Barton when he is 32, how many offers have we actually had now never mind in 3 years? Barton isnt daft, he knows he wouldnt get anywhere near the wages he is on now(and possibly even with his wage cut) anywhere else unless he is a free transfer. He should have took the 3 years and proven he deserves more if he really cared after the amount of wasted money in him most of his time here. He even refused to take a paycut in prison according to reports at the time yet Smith is a greedy bastard for daring to (wrongly) think he is still a PL footballer. Good professional but a poor player, thats it.
Skirge
You may be right, but I just see Joey as a more straight forward want to play football kind of lad... Not many players would stay at a club after being told they are not wanted, Smith has no interest in playing football any more he just wants his wages. You think if we told Joey to find another club he would just be happy to stay and not play ?

He must know that his decision could have left him in limbo(especially after his little outbursts) so yes he probably would for 12 months if it happened. It wont as we are shorthanded as it is. Ashley17
Smith has no interest in playing football anymore? I think it's the complete opposite, he loves playing he's just shit at it. If you were earning 60k a week or whatever would you drop down to about 10k a week to play in the Championship?

Cajun
I can completely understand the clubs reluctance to give Barton a long term contract, he has only been good for around 25% of his time here for numerous reasons and we stuck by him when we had every reason to shift him (which as a popular idea on here for a number of posters a few times during his time here). ponsaelius
He's better than the likes of Fletcher, Carrick or Anderson for sure. He's not a better central midfielder than any of those.
Hanshithispantz
I reckon he'd be better than Carrick in the centre for Man U mind.

David28
Put Barton in the centre of the Man Utd team with players like Nani, Rooney, Berbatov or Hernandez around him and he'll look a great CM. Or the other way around, put Carrick, Fletcher or Anderson into our team (at least our team at times last season when Barton played CM) and they'll look useless. ponsaelius
That is absolute bollocks man. As a central midfielder all 3 of those piss on Barton.

ponsaelius
Honestly man, I rate Barton as a half decent footballer and like him as a personality but some people on here go WAYYYYY overboard on his ability level.

For sure I'm one of them. But at times last season Barton has shown that he has more talent than those 3 I've named.
