Richards named in England squad

Manchester City defender Micah Richards has been named in the 28-man England squad for the friendly against Holland.

The 18-year-old defender has made three appearances for the England Under-21s.

Richards, Tottenham defender Michael Dawson and Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster are the only uncapped people in the squad ahead Wednesday's friendly.

Kieran Richardson is the only player omitted from the squad that contested the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Macedonia and Croatia.

Joe Cole, Aaron Lennon and Andrew Johnson are back after missing the previous squad through injury.

McClaren will be looking for a solid performance from his team following the draw against Macedonia and defeat in Croatia.

And he expects a tough game at the Amsterdam ArenA.

"Holland are always tough opponents as they have a great history and tradition and I am sure it will be very competitive," McClaren told the Football Association website.

"Both the staff and the players are really looking forward to playing one of the top teams in an impressive stadium."

Richards made his first-team debut for City as an 85th-minute substitute in a Premiership fixture at Arsenal on 22 October, 2005.

He is a product of City's young Academy and has been an ever present in Stuart Pearce's team this season, more usually playing at right-back than his preferred position in the centre of defence.

Defender Dawson joined Tottenham for £4m in January 2005, while keeper Foster is on loan at Watford from Manchester United.

Dutch coach Marco van Basten has named eight British-based players in his squad for the game.

Chelsea pair Arjen Robben and Khalid Boulahrouz, Celtic duo Evander Sno and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Wigan's Denny Landzaat, Robin van Persie of Arsenal, Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool and Blackburn's Andre Ooijer have all received call-ups.

The claims of Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy have been ignored, while Van Basten has agreed to rest Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

England have failed to beat Holland in three friendlies since their 4-1 win over the Dutch at Euro 96.

Holland were 2-0 friendly winners over England in 2001 at White Hart Lane and since then the sides have been inseparable - a 1-1 stalemate at the Amsterdam ArenA in 2002 and a 0-0 draw at Villa Park in 2005.

Good news for the lad, he's clearly a cut above, no point messing him around in the U21s and give chances to relatively ordinary players like Young, get him straight in the side as much as possible like they did with Rooney.

And the best news? There are no Arsenal players in the England squad to have a little word in his ear.  bluebiggrin.gif

But there are 6 Spurs players who can try to convince him of the error of his ways! :winking:

How the f*ck is Evander Sno in the squad?! Whenever I've seen him he's been f*cking terrible.

He had one really good game in the CL against Benfica so Van Basten will call him up on the strength of that alone to make up the numbers since he refuses to use the older heads like Seedorf
