HUTCHINSON RETIRES

Sam Hutchinson has announced his retirement as a professional footballer.

Unfortunately the 21-year-old defender suffered a reoccurrence of the knee injury that affected his past three seasons and it is has been decided he will not recover sufficiently for the physical demands of a professional career.

Hutchinson will continue to be supported by Chelsea Football Club and will work in our Academy while also studying sports science at university. He will later pursue coaching qualifications.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in the final league game of the 2006/07 season and was part of the first team pre-season visit to the United States that followed. Then-manager José Mourinho spoke about him as a future permanent member of the Chelsea squad.

Comfortable at full-back or in central-defence, Hutchinson was expected to make rapid progress but after just five reserve games in 2007/08, the knee problems began and brought the season to a halt.

Further recovery time was needed in the middle section of 2008/09, limiting Sam to six games for the reserves, a side which he had captained.

He joined Chelsea at the age of nine and developed into an England Under-19 international. He received an England Under 21 call-up but withdrew to manage his injury, a process that looked to be paying dividends when Hutchinson rejoined the first team squad for the pre-season tour of the US in 2009.

Last season he played as a sub against Fulham in August, started against QPR in the Carling Cup, before in April, coming on in the 7-0 home win over Stoke and crossing for Frank Lampard's goal.

In total Hutchinson started one game for Chelsea and made three sub appearances. Chelsea Football Club thanks him for his on-pitch contribution and wishes him well in his future work with the club.

Really sad news. Sounds like he was very highly rated and could have gone on to become a good player.

Well done Chelsea. I'd love to think Newcastle would do that for any of our young players, but I think I'd be fooling myself. That's a very classy thing for a football club to do, especially since he's such a young player and won't have had the chance to 'save' his money from his career.

However, want isn't classy is Chelsea fans charging subscriptions to sign up to unofficial fan forums  :dowie:

All I wanted to do was leave a little 'Well Wishes' message. £12/£18?! Jesus, hope Dave doesn't get any ideas.

Talksport -

Habib Beye has been handed one last chance to save his Aston Villa career.

Caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald put his faith in Beye for Villa's 1-1 draw over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League qualifying on Thursday.

And now the Egyptian has been allowed to prove himself at Villa Park, with MacDonald set to name Beye in his line-up to face former club Newcastle on Sunday.

The 32-year-old moved from St James' Park last season to join Villa but he has struggled to make the impact he wanted - but as no club has shown a concrete interest in him, Beye has decided to fight for his future in the Midlands - with MacDonald ready to give Beye his chance this weekend.

This tickled me, SkySports.com's match preview for WBA/mackems, predicted line-up:

Sunderland: Mignolet, Onouha, Richardson, Bramble, Da Silva, Elmohamady, Henderson, Malbranque, Angeleri, Bent, Campbell.

What an awful effort at spelling that name

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes admits regret at World Cup 2010 snub again

Red Devils star wishes he had gone to South Africa...

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has revealed he wished he had been given more time to consider an England World Cup 2010 call up.

Scholes, 35, was approached hours before the provisional 30-man squad by general manager Franco Baldini. After initially agreeing to the offer, he soon pulled the plug on the trip to South Africa.

Speaking to BBC show 'Football Focus', Scholes admitted "there was a touch of regret" that he didn't play for the Three Lions for the first time since announcing his international retirement in 2004.

He said: "I wish I had gone.

"I did feel as though I had made the wrong decision.

"I had only been given a couple hours, so it was a bit of a rush job, but the World Cup is the biggest tournament you can be involved in.

"There was a touch of regret but it doesn't matter now. It has gone."

Would it have made any difference?

Might have made a difference... depending on whether he could have avoided the white shirt disease that was going around. Of course, chances of him getting on the pitch were slim to none given Capello's attitude re: Lampard et al.
