Actually, outside of NUFC and SAFC how many North East born players are playing in the PL?

Carroll, Henderson, Carrick, Adam Johnson, David Wheater. Any more?

All in all its an embarrassment. For such a big area, our talent output is awful.

Tbh, there's only about 150 English players in the Premier League in total. I'd say even though the figures are poor, it's more of a nationwide problem than something restricted to the NE.

The North East region is the smallest of all 9 regions in England with a population of 2,515,442. This equates to 4.3% of the entire population of England.

Taken from February this season the number of English players represented in the Premier League:

Opta has provided us with intriguing stats which show the number of English players fielded by each Premier League team so far this campaign. The figures are: Aston Villa and Newcastle 16' date=' Sunderland, Blackpool and West Ham 13, Birmingham 12, Wolves 11, Bolton 10, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham 9, Fulham, Manchester City and Stoke 8, West Brom 7, Blackburn and Wigan 6, Chelsea 5 and Arsenal 4.[/quote']

This totals: 192 players as a rough estimate.

So in theory we should be contributing around 4.3% of that, which would be just over 8 players. This means that overall the North East region probably contributes a proportion of footballers equal to the proportion of the entire population.

This suggests to me the problem is more to do with not enough English players in general, rather than the NE lagging behind.

It's no wonder there's such a shortage of English players in the PL when foreigners like Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa were all picked up for less than £15m while Jordan Henderson is costing £20m.

Then again, it's a chicken and the egg scenario. Some may argue Jordan Henderson costs that because there is so few...
