Would rather have kept him tbh but I think Ferguson is better and in Barton, Ferguson, Jonas and Marveaux we pretty much have the wings covered. Stupidly enough Raylor is probably the more effective player in this league too.

We don't half sell our players off cheap like. (bar you-know-who, obviously).

We did get upwards of 25m for Bassong, Beye, Duff and Martins in 09/10.

Apparently Mikes killer negotiating skills really come out when the adrenaline rush of relegation kicks in.

It's different if you're selling a decent player to a decent team in a decent league. It's an entirely different story when you're selling a player who's consistently proved to choke at a higher level, who's clearly not fancied by the manager and who was bought for roughly between £1 and 2mil to a team in the Championship.

http://www.journallive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2011/07/08/danny-simpson-close-to-signing-five-year-deal-61634-29016123/2/

NEWCASTLE United right-back Danny Simpson is edging closer to signing a new five-year contract after a fresh round of “positive” talks this week.

United – who have agreed a £2million deal with Nottingham Forest that should see Wayne Routledge join the Championship club by the end of the week – are playing a cautious game on new contracts and Simpson has been made to wait for his new contract.

But with Alan Pardew urging the board to hand him a long-term deal, it appears as if an agreement is close after talks were re-opened this week.

The United boss would be loathe to lose Simpson, and there was a chance of that with Alex McLeish a long-standing admirer of the right-back.

He was credited with an interest when manager of Birmingham City and had ear-marked Simpson as a candidate for the right-back vacancy at his new club Aston Villa.

But the chances of him departing Newcastle appear to be receding, with his agent Will Salthouse telling The Journal that progress is anticipated soon.

“We had a successful meeting this week and we’re just waiting to hear back now,” he said.

“The deal is with the club now and we’re waiting to hear from them.”

As the Magpies look to tie Simpson up to a long-term deal it appears Routledge’s exit from St James’ Park is all but confirmed.

The winger was in Nottingham yesterday to discuss personal terms after Forest had an offer, in the region of £2million, accepted by United.

Former Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren has swooped after a move to QPR fell through, saving the winger from a season on the fringes at St James’ Park.

Routledge was expected to go to the Championship winners at the end of the season but the boardroom chaos at Loftus Road prevented Neil Warnock from brokering any kind of deal for the midfielder.

Routledge reported for pre-season training on Monday but was understood to be reluctant to stay at St James’ Park, where his stock fell dramatically last season after a scintillating start in black and white.

He played a big role in United’s Championship win but once again struggled with the step up to the Premier League and failed to make an impact against top tier defences.

Newcastle have recruited Rennes wide man Sylvain Marveaux over the summer and still have Joey Barton (pictured right), who made the right wing slot his own last term.

United are clearing the decks as they look to fund new faces. Kazenga Lualua, Leon Best and Nile Ranger are all available at the right price as Pardew looks to freshen up his side.

United continue to chase new signings and retain a major interest in Mevlüt Erdinç despite club sources appearing downbeat about their chances on Wednesday.

The striker’s future is still uncertain at Paris-Saint Germain, although the club have indicated that they would like him to stay.

We often get good/very good prices for people both incoming and outgoing. Can't complain about that area of the club.

Agreed, the Dyer fee in particular was sheer daylight robbery

Pretty sure he was in the training photos, could have gone later I suppose.

Edit: is that the lad?:

Ice ice baby

Defo Routledge there. Who's no. 15? He's fooking massive.

Is it the Goslingator? With new shorter hair maybe.

Aye, looks like Dan Gosling.

Star today claiming us and Spurs have been watching Ante Vukusic from Hadjuk Split. Dispite clearly being bollocks he is young, highly rated and reasonably cheap at €5m.........

Edit: After an extensive 3 minute scouting mission on YT he looks a canny player, not sure where the Star's 'next Modric' link comes from given hes a goalscoring striker based on that  :undecided:
