mattypnufc
Just started out helping my mate with his u9's team. Been observing and helping my nephew's team for the past 2 and a half years and it's about time I started with badges. The club my mates at put us through our level 1, however anyone got any advice for someone starting out? Any decent websites to check out to nail the basics down? Hints and tips for keeping 9yr olds attention/discapline?
Guest ObiChrisKenobi
If you can, come along to: http://www.northumberlandfa.com/Development/Coach+The+Coach/ The next one is on the 30th March at Complete Football in Gosforth Park. The topic is GK, however, you'll still get the chance to observe another coach in action. So you'll be able to pick tips up on how he gives his coaching points. Next website would be: http://nfpsoccer.co.uk/ You get a free month to test it out and it contains a huge amount of session plans. They could be a bit confusing at first look, but stick with it and they'll make sense the more you coach (see other's coach). After the month its £10 for the entire year. The guy who runs it (Barney Jones) is great. If you continue with your badges you're bound to meet Barney Jones at some point. There are other sites out there such as: http://www.footy4kids.co.uk/ However, I've found that forums like this (and general football ones) and especially twitter contain a fair amount of shared knowledge. Its picking the meat from the crap at times as everyone has an opinion on how to coach and what should be coached. Overall it'll mainly come down to coaching as much as you can and watching others coach as much as you can. Can't really learn from reading about it. Hints and tips for keeping 9yr olds attention/discapline? Yeah, they don't really teach this at any point. Be strict but fair (if that makes sense). Grab their attention and nip things in the bud before they can start. Don't talk any longer than 30 seconds, so try and give your coaching points in bitsized bits, otherwise they'll naturally switch off. Same with the drills, keep rotating and progressing otherwise they'll become bored.

mattypnufc
Cheers OCK mate. We've had NUFC foundation doing coaching during the week the past 3 weeks so thats been helpful. Moving to grass now that the clocks have went foward. Overall enjoying it, getting more involved and trying my best to influence. Just little nuggets during the games we've had, such as instilling a bit of confidence, few jokes here and there...like a Terry Mac kind of role haha. I was never the most gifted player at school but just enjoy playing still and like the technical aspect of it too.
Guest ObiChrisKenobi
Glad you're enjoying it! Really recommend getting yourself one of the free sports on the Youth Award Modules 1&2. They should really be done instead of the Level 1 course (or at least made part of it). They'll really help you understand how to coach children and prepare your session.
