Owen: Wants England recall

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has reiterated his desire to play for the national side again and is ready to answer Fabio Capello's call if the England manager should decide to offer him a return to the fold.

The 30-year-old's only appearance under Capello came in the second half of England's 1-0 friendly defeat in France back in March 2008.

Owen's chances of a World Cup call-up evaporated after the striker was ruled out for the rest of the Premier League campaign for the Red Devils in March of this year after sustaining a hamstring injury during the League Cup final victory against Aston Villa.

Owen admits that it was frustrating to watch England implode at the tournament and insists he is still available for selection if the Italian decides he needs him.

"I went to the last three World Cups and a couple of European Championships so it's been really different this time," he said.

"It was frustrating for me and for everyone. There were a lot of questions that came out of the tournament.

"I obviously missed the tournament through injury which isn't like me. Whether I would've been picked is another matter, but I believe I would have been. I missed it because I wasn't available but I've definitely not retired from international football."

Owen also backs his United team-mate Wayne Rooney following the striker's dismal form in South Africa as the 24-year-old went the tournament without a goal to his name despite being tipped to take the competition by storm.

Rooney has not scored a goal for the Three Lions in more than nine months and he also struggled to find his form for Sir Alex Ferguson's side at the end of last season due to a niggling ankle injury.

Owen, however, is confident that the former Everton forward can get back to his best once he returns from the summer break.

"People talk about Wayne after the World Cup because he is Wayne, but there were other players who didn't perform at the World Cup too," said Owen.

"People will inevitably focus on Wayne though. He wasn't at the top of his game, for whatever reason - whether it was tiredness or because the rest of the team around him wasn't playing well.

"He wasn't at his best but we all know he's a world-class player. After a few weeks off he will be back and scoring again."

No, of course.  Of course.

There's self-belief and then there's self-delusion.

Thing is, how much some even hate him, he would have scored goals for England.

So be mad he wanted to be there, because he would probably be the one putting England past the Germans

I don't think he would.

Would you preferred Heskey or Owen, that is the ultimate question.

He'd still have taken Heskey instead.

Of course he wouldn't. He needs great service to get a chance - and he needs many chances nowadays to score one goal. With that kind of service Rooney/Defoe/Heskey got he would not have scored.

He isn't the Owen who once scored a hattrick against Germany.

Owen has been called up once by Fabio Capello in his 28 games in charge. He played 45mins against France over two years ago.

Just give it up Michael.

I guess just has a bit new hope now. And he's right, I think. If Capello gets sacked he'll be in the next squad if he plays for Man U.

I did add them bits for effect like. But we all know that's what he's thinking.

Man Utd was meant to be the making of Owen.  "With that sort of service he'll get loads of goals, he won't be feeding on scraps like he was at Newcastle!"  Hasn't turned out that way and everyone can see it but him.

True. Had that good game where he bagged a hat trick but otherwise he's been average.

One of the many things that've pissed me off about the media's reaction to what happened is the criticism Capello's got for sticking to 442, these are the same useless twats who've criticised every other England manager whenever they've played some alternative system because "it's not the 442 they're used to playing in the Premiership". I know it's hardly an insight, but the football media are 99% clueless, I mean, who the fuck is Andy Townsend to be criticising anyone, especially someone with the track-record of Capello, I'd be offended if he criticised me, for fuck's sake!
