Guest neesy111
Isn't it better to spend £5-£7 million on 1 quality midfielder than to buy no-one and risk being relegated again?
ponsaelius
It wouldn't even take that much to make us a midtable side but ATM we're going down.
midds
There has to be a balance between spending beyond our means and spending virtually nothing. I thought the penny had dropped in January where he released a modest amount of money to buy Routledge which gave us an extra gear which meant we pissed the league. Why he can't apply the same common sense to this transfer window I've got no idea. Releasing another modest amount of money to get the likes of Ben Arfa in would have made complete sense but he's trying to do it on the cheap. We're going to yo-yo for the next few years imo. Guest Roger Kint
Remember when we got promoted many were saying we needed £20m, £30m and some even £40m just to get back to around 10th place. When you look at some deals already done and those we are linked to its pretty clear that £10m to £15m should have given us a comfortable position yet we sit here less than 2 weeks from barely trying tbh. Hasnt anyone at the club mentioned to Mike that 3 year season ticket deals end this year? Hardly a great way to convince us to start paying again by letting us fall out the league as we easily could. AyeDubbleYoo
We're still a significantly better side than we were when we went down, and even then we only got relegated by a point.
Beren
I think the risk of relegation remains with or without Ben Arfa, albeit reduced somewhat with. It's easy to crucify Mike Ashley for not spending the money now, but if we buy him and get relegated he'll still be crucified so I'm personally going to withhold judgement - especially as the finances of the club are very much unclear. I think we have the resources already to stay up - not because we've got a fantastic squad, but because there are squads far worse than ours about IMO. We just need to utilise what we have for the meanwhile from the looks of it. Our first XI isn't half as bad (in comparison to other relegation candidates and we have some degree of cover - it's a bit early to expect 22 solid players!) as has been made out after the Manure game. Hopefully their belief and confidence doesn't drop and we endure what will almost inevitably be a very unpretty season to consoilidate our place in the top tier whilst maintaining the support of the fans. John P
I sometimes forget that we have a billionaire owner. Even teams like Wigan have spent £10million this summer and that isn't exactly going to be coming from their shirt sales and ticket revenue is it? And is it right that Wolves spent £16million last summer and the same again this? Whereas here we are with our billionaire owner and 50,000 ticket sales every other week and we've spent 1.5million on Perch and seemingly refuse to pay around £5million for a player who is young, would no doubt improve our team and chances of survival and who could very possibly be sold on in the future for a profit. Brilliant. If Ben Arfa isn't the sort of player that fits into the 'Ashley model' then who the hell is?

Guest neesy111
people are only asking to at most sign 1 decent quality midfield player, is it too much to ask for a team that will average 45k-50k attendances this season ?!?

It's not prudent business IMO.

I think the fans have been treated with contempt by Ashley. The feelgood factor after promotion is rapidly going to dwindle if we don't get two or three quality signings through the door and I would expect team morale to drop as well. We can easily do well this season given a modest investment of £15m but without it all the will in the world won't help at this level. Maybe we are in for a pleasant surprise with those signings arriving soon but the Ben Arfa business makes me fear we will lose out on any genuinely good players. BlueStar
I don't know what the fuck the Ashley model is, I don't think he does. I can't work out what he's trying to even do to the club, not even bad long term plans fit. He's not trying to build the club up to a higher level to sell it on, he's not concentrating on buying or developing young talent for profit and becoming a selling club, he's not stripping the assets and selling off our players to the highest bidder, he's not investing in the club to turn it into a high profile profit and advertising machine, where the fuck is he going with this acquisition of his? Is he just going to sit on it as it bobbles between the prem and the championship, slowly drip-dripping away at his personal time and money forever? Doctor Zaius
What he's doing makes no sense what so ever though. Taking a chance of spending nothing and being relegated is a much bigger financial gamble than spending a some money that would keep us up. If anything, by not spending money and increasing our chances of relegation he's taking a bigger risk financially than spending some money. Speculate to accumulate and all that. He recognised the need for players in January and he spent, and we were promoted. Ashley spending no money is bizzare for me.

Hugo Viana was eventually sold for £1.5m after we bought him for £8.5m when he was promising youngster wanted by big clubs in Europe. I'm sure this line of conversation has many more avenues to explore, but I think at the end of each of them is the conclusion that you'd be guessing we could rake the money back and as someone who is financially responsible for the club MA must ensure we're not in trouble in that respect. And of course I want us to stay up, I just don't think Ben Arfa will guarantee us that, just like not getting him won't automatically condemn us to relegation.
