Realistic Transfer Targets January 2011

Why don't we ever go for players directly from South America. Plenty of players there who are much better than what we got.

Players like Jucilei in Corinthians who can play all over the midfield and right back position who is now a player of the national team. Kleber from Palmeiras although he's 27 is a strong striker maybe not what we need but just saying.

I mean we need to send our scouts there and find players such as Solano and so on.

We have good laws in this country the last thing we need is these being relaxed. Sicking seeing African & South American kids left to make there own way home after failing a trial at clubs.

The thing is, there must be 100 players like Solano over there. Players with excellent natural technique who over time can be coached into playing the english way, especially with a striker like Carroll to aim for.

None in none out would really, honestly be an acceptable conclusion to this transfer window assuming that our goal for the season is to avoid relegation.

Absolutely. I'd honestly rather stick with what we've got, and save the budget for the summer... than waste wages on turgid crap that won't improve us (SWP/Bothroyd).

SWP and Bothroyd are crap that would improve us, though.

Not nearly enough to justify spending the money we'd need to. We're not gonna go down, and we're not gonna get into Europe with those sorts of imports. If those are the targets, i'm begging for the window to SLAM SHUT (t).

Oh, and, i disagree btw. Neither of those two would be upgrades to the first team.

Hawer do none of you play FM/have an understanding of immigration laws in this country?

Since when does the law apply to football clubs?

Work permit laws still apply. That's why you don't see an endless stream of youngsters arriving from South America.

The only time it can happen is depending on whether they can dig up some European ancestry and apply for an EU passport or if they have a certain number of international appearances. Other than that sometimes it has been possible through arguing the player is a 'Special talent' like Manure did with that pair of Serbian kids who barely played a game at OT in the end.

The Rafael twins, Rodrigo Possebon for example at Manure..all have Italian passports. The big name South Americans that come over...usually firm fixtures in the international squad.

Edit: More specific on non-EU players:

Currently a non-EU player applying for the permit must have played for his country in at least 75% of its competitive 'A' team matches for which he was available for selection during the previous two years, and his country must have averaged at least 70th place in the official FIFA world rankings over the previous two years. If a player does not meet those criteria, the club wishing to sign him may appeal if they believe that he is a special talent and "able to contribute significantly to the development of the game at the top level in the UK."

Form of Best and Shola sparks transfer rethink

ALAN PARDEW today revealed that the form of Shola Ameobi and Leon Best has "altered his thinking" in the January transfer window.

The Newcastle United boss started the month hoping secure the services of a striker to support his talisman Andy Carroll – but Pardew now admitted he could turn elsewhere.

United target Jay Bothroyd has indicated he wants to stay with Championship promotion contenders Cardiff City, and with Alan Smith leaving the Stadium of Light on crutches with his foot in a pot, a central midfield back-up player could now be on Pardew’s transfer radar.

The Chronicle also understands there could be further movement in the other direction with Wigan Athletic, Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff all thought to be interested in winger Wayne Routledge.

But after leading the Magpies to a 1-1 draw on Wearside, Pardew was left impressed by the way his makeshift strike force led the line.

Best, who grabbed a hat-trick against West Ham, won the corner that led to United’s opener, before Ameobi got the vital flick for Kevin Nolan’s goal.

And Pardew told the Chronicle today: “I have been really buoyed by Shola and Leon – they may just have saved me a problem looking elsewhere.

“And it’s not just them. Peter Lovenkrands has done well too and we’ve got Phil Airey just beneath them.

“Shola and Leon were as good as the home strikers at Sunderland in Darren Bent and Gyan. They did very well indeed.

“That is good for us because we have Andy carrying an injury.

“This has altered my thinking in the transfer window.

“We might be looking to improve in other departments now.”

And when asked if there was any progress on a reported bid for Bothroyd, Pardew said: “It depends on other areas. We may look to strengthen there instead now.

“Leon Best under me has been very good indeed.

“He got the hat-trick against West Ham and, although he found it tough at Stevenage, that was possibly a bridge too far for him because he had been out so long.

“People say he was out of sorts, but I can only judge what I can see and I don’t know if I feel I want to change things.”

Pardew said in Saturday’s Chronicle that he would not panic in the transfer window, and Dan Gosling debut on Wearside, coupled with Hatem Ben Arfa’s expected comeback from a double leg break means that the Londoner is optimistic about the future.

“Danny Guthrie was disappointed not to play against Stevenage. but he’s come in and put in a performance like that when we needed him,” said Pardew.

“Alan Smith also did very well when he came on and it was hard to tell the difference between what was our first-choice team and what was out there against Sunderland with Cheik and Andy missing.”

Pardew was forced to re-iterate yet again that he has no intention of off-loading £35m- rated striker Andy Carroll, with the Geordie linked with Spurs.

Boss Harry Redknapp said yesterday: “He’s a good player, he’s a handful, you’d like to have him in your team. But we are nowhere near getting Carroll.”

Meanwhile, Scottish Premier League outfit Hibernian want to take impressive young striker Phil Airey on loan at Easter Road.

I have already said it a couple of times in other threads but I will say it again, we should be looking at Tshabalala. He scored a couple of beauties for RSA at the World Cup and is currently having trials with Forest. He is quick, strong and Skilful. everything Routledge is not....... (except quick)

Still doesn't justify buying crap ffs.

I never implied that it did.

It's just naive to think that Bothroyd and SWP wouldn't improve us, because they would, albeit slightly.

Would love to know how SWP and Bothroyd would improve us, i really really would.

Barton > SWP

Carroll/Shola > Bothroyd

Might improve the strength in depth a tad, but like i said earlier, not enough to justify wasting money on them. If we're not going to improve the first team then i'd rather we just left the spending till the summer.

Not worth what we'd have to pay. Not by a long stretch. What would be the point - is Shola going to be a first choice striker forever now? I'd rather sign a striker better than him, and see Shola as the cover - where he rightfully should be.

Honestly don't think either would improve us.

Of course they would. Not to the level we should be, but they would improve us.

Bothroyd is nee better than what we have starting upfront and SWP is not a patch on Barton. Would be stupid signings that would simply further pad our squad with average players, I simply do not see that as 'improvement'.

That wasn't the question though. Sewelly said they wouldn't improve us and I'm saying they obviously would.

It would improve the squad depth, as they are human beings. That's literally the only impact they would have.

We should be in the market for players that will provide an immediate impact on the first team - cos there's one or two areas which still need significant improvement. Yes, we need cover at full-back and probably the wings... but we don't need any more squad-fillers in the striking department. Definitely not.
