Not worthy of a thread - 2018 FIFA World Cup edition

Players outside the top six that have gone to last three tournaments..

2016 - Heaton, Bertrand, Forster, Vardy

2014 - Forster, Lallana, Foster, Jagielka, Baines

2012 - Butland, Jagielka, Green, Baines (Martin Kelly went  ???)

The best players of any nationality will always naturally elevate themselves to the top clubs. When you combine that with English players not going abroad for whatever reason, you'll always going to see a the same clubs make up the bulk of a national side.

Obviously there are going to be exceptions, but I'd say English players playing outside the top clubs aren't actually that talented at all. There is a huge amount of total garbage playing regularly in the PL, and a lot of players that despite many seasons playing in the PL have never got near to a call up.

If you look at Spainish national squad, whilst being hugely competitive, they've still been able to draw plenty of players from sides outside their big clubs. Likewise with Germany.

Maybe, and hopefully it's changing now - but it's got to be a case of English clubs producing a comparatively low level of footballer.

Your examples prove shite. Keepers don't count for a start because big clubs rarely play English keepers these days, so in the last 12 years 9 players outside of the top clubs got a seat on the plane if I'm reading that right?

Proving my point if anything.

EDIT: apologies I thought you were arguing a different point when I glanced at the text.

Slightly confused how vardy was outside the top 6 after winning the league

For some odd reason Tite has come out with his starting XI and 16 players that will be in the squad.

Allison (Ederson, ?)

Dani (?) - Miranda (T.Silva) - Marquinhos (?) - Marcelo (?)

R. Augusto (?) - Casemiro (Fernandinho) - Paulinho (?)

Coutinho (Willian) - G. Jesus (Firmino) - Neymar (?)

Pretty much expected although I hope we get a surprise or two in the squad. Douglas Costa has been poor while Malcom and David Neres have done well in their leagues. That central midfield lacks creativity unless you play Coutinho there.

As for Lascelles, I definitely think he should be 4th choice and in the squad.

Haven't watched him/them much but thought Douglas Costa was canny against Spurs

Don't really agree, thought he started very well for ten minutes and had moments he looked bright, however he kept having trouble keeping possession in his own half. Was at the game and he was the most criticized player by the Juve fans. Made a lot of wrong decisions imo. People were asking for him to be subbed off early. Him, Allegri and De Sciglio got endless amounts of abuse by the fans in the 2nd half.

Fair enough, thought he was their most dangerous player on the ball by a mile mind even if he did lose it a bit

That's true, but their whole team was garbage for 75mins. Was ridiculous to see how well they started and how quickly they went away from what was working to just sitting deep even if Spurs did it extremely well.

Oh my god, he's not played for Jamaica?

He'd be a no-brainer in the England squad.

Apparently he’s said he won’t play for Jamaica until they improve.

...you could, ya know, make them better by playing for them, Leon.

On this Bailey thing, every report I've read says that two of his grandparents hold British passports rather than saying they were actually born in Britain. I'm not sure if it is the case but his grandparents would have to actually have been born in Britain for him to be able to play for England

I'm sure his complaints were about the infrastructure and the dysfunctional nature of the FA, rather than the quality of the team. That's not something that he can necessarily do anything about and as sad as it is to see minnows lose quality players, it is sometimes understandable on an individual level.

No doubt there is an element of individualistic career based motivation too, mind. However if a football association is corrupt and shambolic it just encourages such a decision.

I’m just sayin’, I don’t wanna hear any gripes about all the foreign-born players who suit up for the U.S. if this kid chooses to play for England

I doubt he’d have said as much if he didn’t have a chance to play for somebody better. This just gives him a way out.

Far be it from me to tell a player which country he should represent, but at least be honest about it.

Was just reading his wiki. He was Scotland assistant manager for a while and in 2008 they had a friendly against a Maradona managed Argentina. In the build up, Butcher had a massive go at Maradona about the hand of God calling him a cheat. After the game, Maradona was asked about Butcher's comments and he just replied "Who is Butcher?"

Nigeria-Iceland ticket fixed. Volgograd on a roasting hot day in June, here I come. The inner Scotsman cries because of the monetary considerations involved, but the inner football-loving kid is ecstatic :D

Our centrbacks are all crooked, two of the planned starters got their ACLs all ferked up. Which means that the eternal Berezutsky twins or even the 60 y.o. Ignashevitch might still have to play. Or, we might have to arrange a Russian passport for a certain Waldermar Anton who plays for Hannover, with his parents being from Siberia iirc. Already got two Germans repatriated (Rausch and Noedstedter), so why not. What, with youth football still failing to produce any consistent amount of quality players in certain areas. If I were a fan of either Egypt or Uruguay, I would bet my house on Russia conceding in these matches. Literally a handful of players remotely ready for first team international duty at one of the most crucial of positions.

Good news for anyone who has tickets to matches in Nizhny Novgorod and does not intend to bring family along - quite a few of their pub and bar owners plan to work 24/7 during the tournament. Awesome party town, can't wait.
