The plan, which has the full support of FIFA, the sport’s governing body, would have the MLS season begin play in either late July or early August and include a six- to eight-week winter break. The championship would either be played in late May or early June. The MLS season currently begins in March and runs until the championship match in the first week of December. MLS Commissioner Don Garber has been considering adopting the calendar used in Europe for several years but talks have intensified in recent weeks, according to a league source. The move would also placate FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who has been an outspoken — and often unfair — critic of the country’s fastest growing professional league. “It would be better for U.S. soccer, and specifically also for the (United States)national team,” Blatter once said. “And the popularity inside the country.” Most European domestic leagues begin in late August and end in early May. Montreal has the Olympic Stadium and Toronto has the Rogers Centre, so it could work fine. Just a bummer that they won't get to play in their "home" parks. But, it'll probably be best for the league in the long run, and if they really want to compete with other, bigger leagues, they'll have to switch. Agree with that but it shouldn't happen anytime soon. The league is already taking a big risk (im my opinion) by introducing this next wave of expansion, adding this on top of it would be a massive gamble. The MLS had begun to establish it's self during the summer. Even my friends who aren't football fans thought that attending an MLS game (in Foxborough even) was far more enjoyable than a four hour baseball game. MLS even gets some mainstream media coverage during the summer but would during the Winter? NFL, NBA, and the NCAA sports will hardly leave any time. Toon Hoser Posted October 15, 2013 Share Posted October 15, 2013 There is talk that the Toronto Blue Jays plan to install grass inside the Rogers Centre (a dome). That would cause the Canadian Football League team they share the dome with (the Argonauts) to be evicted, because gridiron football is too destructive to natural grass surfaces that baseball teams need to play on. So if the Argonauts get the boot, there is also talk that they might move to the Toronto FC stadium, BMO Field. That stadium would have to be renovated in order to accommodate a CFL-sized field. Once renovations come into play, why not put a roof on the place and presto, Toronto gets an intimate year-round football stadium. True, there's already the Rogers Centre, but it seats 50,000 and is a lifeless tomb when half empty. It sucks for baseball, it sucks for football, it sucks for the other kind of football.
