speaking of former players, despite being less talented than Ginola and Robert I'd probably select Sellars ahead of them in my all-time Toon XI!

On a roll this month, man.

Sellars was great for us, he linked up so well with Beardsley and Cole and was a very good team player to your individual that was often Robert and Ginola. It isn't always about the eye candy Ronny. To pick the best 11 players from the last 20 years individually would be p*ss easy, but to pick the right players to make the best side isn't. For example I'd have Cole and Beardsley as my front two. Shearer was great but when it comes to the team you have to think what works best. That's why I'd have Shearer and Bellamy over Shearer and Sir Les for example.

Who wouldn't?

I don't remember Sellers doing anything better than Robert.

With Shearer in the side I'd have Robert, but if I'm picking Beardsley and Cole for example I'd choose Sellars. Robert scored and created more goals and was obviously a better player but Sellars was a better fit in terms of those around him. Robert was a player for 4-4-2 and with someone like Shearer up top.  Sellars could play in different systems and with different forwards. Anyway, he was a very underrated player for us.

I liked Barton too, tbf, but his only prolonged spell where he looked better than average/shit came on the right-wing. And that was a time when we were fairly one-dimensional and played fairly direct a lot of the time. Barton-Nolan-Carroll worked well for a stretch of time but there was never any longevity to it, and it was combated by better sides.

Hamann second half of the 98-99 season was as good a midfielder I've seen for us. Was much more complete than when he went to Liverpool imo where they restricted him to a more defensive minded midfielder. That goal against Arsenal. :smitten:

The shining light of a shite season.

Exactly it. Barton the CM is a poor PL player at best. RM with Carroll to aim at is a different story.

Loved Bernard but Enrique definitely shades him imo. Jose was an exceptional player for us, especially at the back. And although he didn't get much in the way of goals, the way he brought the ball forward and linked with attackers - plus a good eye for a long pass - made him one of our best attackers, too. Was gutted when he left.

Speed, Solano and Harper had good seasons too.

                  Karelse

S Taylor  S Caldwell  Cacapa  Serrant

Cordone  Dumas  Disco Des  Glass

              Cort  Smith

Bit unfair to include Glass, he was ok imo.

Should have slipped in Garry Brady instead.

Few of them in Wanko's line-up are alright, tbf. However Alan Smith is definitely the worst striker (who had more than the odd game) that I've ever seen for us. Utterly woeful.

Have vague memories of Stephen Glass being quite good?

Glass scored some important goals coming off the bench I seem to remember.

Man Utd (H) 1-1 springs to mind, a SBR triple special.
