The club will never disclose how much Sports Direct contributes in advertising.

My gut feeling is that that Sports Direct do not pay for their hideous advertising, shamelessly plastered all over our stadium.

Cash may not change hands, but SD will 'pay' for advertising due to related party transaction rules (more boring accountancy I'm afraid).

Left pocket/right pocket for MA, but it would go towards any income the club generates and will need to be at a market rate (I'm guessing realistically we could look at the fee Arsenal get from Emirates if we wanted to put a top level amount on it for the UEFA FP regs)

So, does this news mean that Ashley will spend more or less on NUFC?

At a guess, it will make no difference.  The club will still sell players so that it can improve its facilities while Sports Direct gets the free advertising.

How do you know its free?

Total speculation here, but who's to say that the sponsorship deal won't be worth 'x amount' a year when Financial Fair Play comes into effect, to counter any loses? "Oh, we made a £20m lose? OH well, that's how much I paid for sponsorship this season..." "Oh, we made a £15m lose this year? Yeah, that was the Sponsorship total."

Sorry, it's not free, we paid £42,250 for the pleasure.

In the 2009 accounts, Note 23 says that "During the current and prior year, advertising and promotional services were provided to companies associated with Mr MJW Ashley, the ultimate shareholder of the company's parent company, St James' Holdings limited.  No consideration was paid or payable for these services and the cost associated with the services in the prior year was £42,250."

People moaning about the ground name seem to forget the fantastic free advertising he gave in one of his Sports Direct ones with St James Park and the swirling black and white scarves...swings and roundabouts.

even if it's 1mill he's still going to have to be at it for over a century to turn a profit. pretty sure if some other co came in for those advertising spots wanting to pay cold hard cash he'd take it.

What benefit do you think the club gained from the "fantastic free advertising"?

Perhaps if we could attract external advertising, rather than plastering every inch with SD logos, we could use this revenue to fund everyday expenses, instead of pleading poverty and selling our best players to pay the gas bill?

Darren Clarke's just pocketed £2m for winning the Open, courtesy of Mike.

Good.

Nope, striker transfer budget has just dropped by £2m.

The good news however is that Carlton Cole is now out of our reach.
