Tsunami Posted May 7, 2012 Share Posted May 7, 2012 1984 Huddersfield Town (a) 2-2 (2-2) Division Two 77pts, 3rd Beardsley(41), Mills(45) Cooper(22), og(Carney)(26) 25,101 48 hours after beating Derby County at SJP, our promotion was mathematically assured after this Bank Holiday Monday game. With Kevin Keegan missing due to injury, United found themselves two goals behind before Peter Beardsley took over. Hammering home a 20 yard effort to reduce the arrears, he then set up David Mills to level - with John Anderson having seen his effort mysteriously ruled out in between times. Clad in their silver strips, Newcastle were unable to produce a second half winner, but that didn't matter to the Geordie hordes that had taken over Leeds Road and invaded the pitch at full time. Great atmosphere i'm led to believe? I was behind the goal, there was a lad miles up a floodlight, it was all a bit mental. There were Geordies all over the pace. I was behind the goal (uncovered end). we were supposed to have both ends but also had many in the stand along the touch line. My first taste of red stripe in a rasta bar and the sight of a bloke in a black and white kilt stood in the middle of a crossroads directing traffic for about 20mins. I remember watching the scenes on the Tele and thinking if the fire had jumped to the stand to the left, in the almost adjoining corner was a store romm full of paint and welding gear, as if it wasn't bad enough already. And I have to say, although I wouldn't want to do it again in a hurry, the Championship was very enjoyable. Some class away games, and we used to hammer shit teams. Sinclair's goal sparked a hail of bottles being thrown on to the field from the Rangers fans in the Gallowgate End and pitch invasion that followed halted play for seventeen minutes. Police made 30 arrests - all but five of which were from Clydeside - and 89 fans needed medical attention. Trouble had flared before the game in the city centre with pubs and shops vandalised, while visiting fans forced a gate at the Gallowgate End open to gain entry to the ground. And there had been a brief stoppage before half time in the tie, when Rangers supporters spilled on to the field after a bottle was thrown at their own 'keeper, Gerhardt Neef. His replacement was announced as Derek Llambias, an Ashley associate and Managing Director of a London casino. Might explode next season My theory is that the Championship was like our 2 week Summer Holiday after months of toil and disappointment, but now we are back refreshed and in serious business.
