Hatem Ben Arfa

Were we playing Le Gouff as a faux Jonas against the mackems? I wasn't sure what it is he was supposed to be doing. He played with his back not only to their goal, but to the TV cameras as well.

Yes, his role seems to be the right-sided Jonas most games. We haven't really seen what he's made of as a CF except against Morecambe where he hardly got a kick before being subbed in the second half.

And you're wondering why he's hardly featured as a CF?

Tbf M'Biwa was the worst player on the pitch for that game. And debuchy was terrible.

He was releasing the ball a bit quicker and played a lovely pass to Cisse for that chance. Should have done better with a cross after skinning Zabaleta though, just needed to play it low.

No one ever seems to drive it low across the face of goal when they get in round defences. Always wafted efforts (to our non-existent Bierhoff/Ferdinand/Klose front three) or side-footed balls which are easily dealt with.

I disagree that we were worse after he came on. We worse after Cabaye came on for Shola. The only thing that was working was the long balls to Shola and we lost that once he came off.

Thought Ben Arfa looked far better than he has recently. Touch looked good, he was picking out the right passes and was dropping deep to be the playmaker. Could be because he was against tired legs but for me he showed enough to be a certain starter next game.

Will say one thing though. When was the last time anyone would say they saw him sprint at full speed with the ball? Probably his best attribute was the way he could run through the middle of the pitch at times at full speed while keeping the ball under complete control. I haven't seen him do it once except for maybe a few bursts against Villa.

Alan Pardew has conceded he is still trying to figure out how to get the best out of mercurial winger Hatem Ben Arfa ahead of Newcastle's game against Chelsea this weekend.

Ben Arfa has proved he can be a match-winner on his day but his form has been hit and miss in a season of mixed performances where he has often drifted in and out of matches.

Pardew insisted Newcastle, who lost to north-east rivals Sunderland last weekend, are in desperate need of greater consistency in the mercurial Frenchman's play.

"The truth with Hatem is we need a consistency in his play, and that's what we are searching for in the team," Pardew said.

"The decision-making process of Hatem is sometimes crucial, taking players on or playing it quickly. It's that balance that we are trying to get in the team that's right for Hatem and right for us."

Newcastle are without a win in their last three matches ahead of the visit of Jose Mourinho's side on Saturday. Pardew confessed his admiration for the Portuguese coach and knows his side will have their work cut out against a manager at the "top of his game".

He said: "Because he has that flamboyant character and he can be amusing and articulate in the same sentence, it sometimes takes attention away from the professionalism he brings to the training ground and the organisation.

"I always find when you play him, his teams are very, very well organised and very difficult to break down, and that's why he gets the wins he gets.

"You can see Jose is comfortable at Chelsea and you can see in his demeanour that he is at the top of his game at the minute, so it's tough to cross swords with him when he is like that."

Yes, very hard to achieve for you that, Alan, isn't it? You witless smear of jenkem.

Remember him lightning through that Everton midfield and defense when he first signed for us?

Here's a revelatory idea, he could play him right wing where he was winning us games before Pardew had the amazing idea of moving him to left wing and then striker.

A few times against Villa and Fulham, just flashes though and I'm not sure its been seen at all since he was moved away from right wing.

Over 2 years of working with him and still can't figure it out.

Says it all really.
