If they sign Fletcher, is there a pattern with this player?

Bought by Burnley for 3 million................relegated

Bought by Wolves for 6 million................relegated

Bought by Sunderland for 12 million.........?????????

Price doubles each time but same result happens

Sorry, meant 2006-7

4 from January onwards

Scored 17 goals for us that season, 11 in the league, more than double anybody else in our squad. We'd have gone done without him that season (unless we'd have brought in another striker of similar ability) regardless of when he scored the goals that kept us up.

11 goals is the least you'd expect from the main striker of any Premier League club. He was the centre-forward equivalent of Titus Bramble.

Did that goal-returnm roughly coincide with Parkers return from injury that year, and Butt's demotion back to the bench?

During Parker's injury spell, without his signature spin on the ball followed by the 5-10yd sideways or backwards pass we were a much better counterattacking unit. I remember Martins being alot more productive when Butt was the mainstay in the DM position, because Butt (as the often first receiver & deep lying mid.distrubutor) was an instinctive 'attacking' one-touch passer ala Speed.

Although abreviated due to his place in the pecking order (ie. behind Parker, before & after SP's injury), we saw the best of Martins when Butt was pulling the strings from the deeper midfield slot. The same could be said for Emre as well, his central midfield partner at the time.

Doesn't excuse the guilt-edge chances he missed though, over the long haul. In terms of premiership points thrown down the drain, they're as costly as Bramble's brain freezes & the failings of Williamson (and Andy O' as well) ie. allowing their man to win goalside position far too easily.

Especially for a striker that cost 10M as well.

Whilst that may be true it doesn't detract from the fact his goals kept us up that year. He was a 1 in 3 striker in his time with us, often our only real outlet and we more or less got our money back for him in the end. As far as I know he's never spoken badly about the club or the fans, so I don't understand the hatred personally, but each to their own.

I dont think its hatred, just people recognising that he was erratic most of the time.

Would have been interesting to see him in a half decent team and not the mess we were in at the time.

Erratic is the perfect word tbh. He'll always have a place in my heart for that goal against Spurs like.

I will never forget him rattling the crossbar at Anfield from a fairly innocuous throw in about 40 yards out in the right channel. Consistently inconsistent, which became more and more of a problem as we slipped down the league.

That time he hit the bar against Chelsea at home in the cup, thought it was in. Then Drogbarrr went and cheated a free kick into the top corner.

That cheating free kick, man. I'd wiped that from my memory until now  He scores from where he wants to place it and the ref lets him do it

I loved Oba when he was here, was a bit blind to all his faults if I'm honest (young and naive).

He was one of the better, more exciting players we had during a dull period.  He was massively inconsistent and I can see watching him now for other clubs, he isn't a very good footballer!

I used to f***ing hate the chanting for him every 5 minutes if he wasn't on the pitch.

Was so infuriating, just like him as a player

We really didn't have much to sing/chant about during those seasons.
