Unbelievable.

I'm still in disbelief that they've actually sacked Saint M'ON to replace him with a fascist, completely inexperienced nutcase with absolutely no ties to their club, and it's taken the daft knackers on the SMB less than 24 hours to get over losing the man they have proclaimed their saviour for the past year and a half, casually condone fascism, insult lifelong fellow fans who dare to speak out against their new head coach's political views, embrace their new man as their next saviour and all this whilst not even questioning in the slightest the sanity or judgement of their owner and board of directors.. They really are a bit special aren't they?

So this carry-on is still going I see.

Fascist this and fascist that. Why hasn't he been hounded out of England yet? Why was he allowed back in the country to begin with? Are Swindon fans who wanted the club to keep him "a bit special" too?

His political views are absolutely irrelevant. He's a football manager, end of story. It's typical of the media to stir up this circus around him now because they have f*** all else to fill their column inches with. The title race is over, and their favorite teams are out of the CL.

I hope he fails miserably because of who he manages, and there's nothing I can do about his political preferences.

He's the one who blurred the line between politics and football. He's the one who spent his time at Lazio continually making Nazi salutes before and after matches. In that context his views are not irrelevant, quite the opposite.

Unfortunately it's not irrelevant as he is in the public eye and a role model, also not surprised it offends people due to what fascism has caused in history. Will be interesting to see how their players react to him.

I'm sorry like, but I don't see any extremist Christians being singled out for their beliefs! Extremist Christianity has caused far more death and misery throughout history.

No doubt he made a huge PR mistake with those salutes. But if he was alright to manage Swindon in L2, then why is it not alright for him to manage in the top division? Why haven't we had a thread on him condemning him being allowed to be a public figure/role model as manager of Swindon Town?

This whole circus will die down once the media finds something else to prey on. I just find the whole holier than thou attitude from our fans (and other clubs' supporters) a bit over the top.

There's no denying that SAFC have brought this upon themselves though. Surely they would have known the kind of attention it would raise. From that perspective, to go along with the fact that he's a relatively unknown managerial quantity, this is probably going to be a disaster for them. Thank goodness for that!

Thats the thing, you cant just dismiss it like that, it's not him coming out as a Tory or a Eurosceptic, he's a self confessed fascist, and a lot of people - quite rightly - still have a problem with that.

You're right, he's entitled to his views, as that's the sort of thing we protect in a modern democracy - see what your average fascist thinks of that.

With all the talk of racism in the game recently, it's kind of a bit ironic to think that:

Number of black managers in the top flight = zero.

Number of admitted fascists managing in the top flight = one.

I think Sunderland have dropped an almighty ricket here. Not because they're signed up a league one manager who has a clear temper problem, and proven history in being slightly nuts, but because they've effectively looked at the potential backlash from this and thought "What the fuck".

It is not good.

I'm not even debating that. That's obviously a given. We haven't a clue what most footballers or managers political ideals are. All I'm saying is, he seemed to get on with his footballing job fine at Swindon (as in, without letting his political views get in the way), so why not just focus on the footballing aspect of this appointment? Why do we always seem to cling to details that deter from the matter at hand.

If he'd been a convicted murderer, or a rapist, it would be a completely different story. The day political opinions become a crime is the day the democracy dies.

One other thing, the criticism of Miliband on RTG is nuts.

His parents were refugees from fascist Europe. What is he supposed to do? Act like it doesn't matter?

He has done the principled thing.

He kind of ran into a few problems at Swindon. To the extent that the situation was being compared to the John Terry and Luis Suarez incidents.

Swindon Town privately admitted that a comment made by manager Paolo Di Canio to on-loan French striker Jonathan Tehoue was "inappropriate", BBC Sport has learnt.

The club accepts that the use of this phrase was inappropriate and apologises to your client for any upset that this has caused him

Swindon Town's solicitor in response to Jonathan Tehoue's lawyers

In a statement earlier this month the club said the player's complaint of racist abuse was "without merit" and that Di Canio had "complete and unequivocal support".

However, Swindon's solicitor wrote in response to Tehoue's lawyers in April, saying: "The club wishes to make it clear that it does not condone the reference made by Mr Di Canio during training on 29 March to your client."

Di Canio was alleged to have referred to Tehoue by his skin colour, not his name, and is under investigation by the Football Association over the claims.

Documents obtained by the BBC read: "The club accepts that the use of this phrase was inappropriate and apologises to your client for any upset that this has caused him."

The club added that an internal inquiry "may result in disciplinary action being taken against Mr Di Canio".

It added: "Mr Di Canio wishes to apologise for the comments, which he did not intend to cause offence by.

"This apology is hereby repeated and the club also regrets that the comment was made by Mr Di Canio."

In a statement on Tuesday, Swindon said that the legal correspondence was exchanged "before an internal inquiry had been completed by the club in response to the complaint made by the player" and that "accordingly we continue to stand by Mr Di Canio and the contents of our statement issued on 15 May".

Previously, Swindon's lawyers had insisted that Di Canio "in no sense intended the reference to be a racial slur", and argued that Tehoue had been in breach of contract by failing to train as requested. They described Tehoue's claim as "spurious".

Play media

Tehoue originally complained to the club that Di Canio had made a racially abusive comment about him in front of Swindon players.

On 5 April, Tehoue's lawyers wrote to Swindon complaining about a comment that "constituted a totally unacceptable and reprehensible racial slur".

They also accused Di Canio of making "defamatory comments" about the player in the media which they argued had left Tehoue in an "impossible situation."

Tehoue made just three appearances for Swindon before Di Canio ended the loan spell, telling BBC Wilshire "he's not as good as I thought he was."

On 15 May, the club issued a statement saying that "the board was fully appraised of the facts at the time of the incident back in March and having investigated it, was satisfied that it was without merit and took appropriate action then.

"Paolo Di Canio denies completely any suggestion that he used toward Jonathan Tehoue or anyone, abusive, insulting or threatening words or behaviour by reference to race or at all and the board wishes to reaffirm its complete and unequivocal support for manager in this regard.

He's not as good as I thought he was. I have much better players than him in the way I want them to play and behave

Di Canio commenting on Tehoue's omission from the squad

"Further, the board is wholly satisfied that any decisions concerning Jonathan Tehoue's playing career while at STFC were made for purely footballing reasons."

A source close to the player told the BBC: "Jonathan was very aggrieved by Di Canio's dismissive racist remark about him.

"His decision not to return to training was based purely and simply on the fact that he was not prepared to work for a manager who held such views.

"Swindon Town appreciated Jonathan's position on the matter and, despite the manager's insistence, decided against fining the player.

"Di Canio's subsequent attempts to tarnish Jonathan's reputation and ruin his future career opportunities with derogatory comments about his attitude and fitness in the press were completely unwarranted.

"With regards to his fitness, prior to joining Swindon, Jonathan had started the last three consecutive games for Leyton Orient and performed well at League One level.

"In addition, he was required to pass Swindon's own fitness assessment before signing, which he passed with no difficulties.

"The decision to report Paolo to the FA was not taken lightly but it is one that he has been forced to take through Swindon Town's seeming unwillingness to address a matter of grave importance."

When contacted by the BBC last night, the club said, "Swindon Town FC reaffirm the content of the statement that was issued on 15 May and has no further comment to make at this time.

"The matter is the subject of an on-going FA review, which the club is fully supporting."

The day political opinions become a crime is the day the democracy dies.

No, it isn't.

Democracy protects the rights of people to hold views in that they do not infringe on the ability of others to do so.

I'd also say your argument misses the fact that fascist views are utter reprehensible, and are all about infriging the rights of others to hold their own views.

I understand some people will be making a big deal out of Di Canio's appointment because they want their 5 minutes in the media, but for others of us this is actually a big deal.

Say what you want, but the last thing I want is something to 'cry about' - nor am I a raging lefty.

I am going to terminate my season ticket until he leaves, and will return once he leaves I will give the club my money.

I understand why for many of you it doesn't matter what his ideology is; and that to you you see football and politics as separate etc. but I just can't.

I absolutely believe he has the right to whatever political opinion he wants - but having some political opinions make you unfit for certain jobs.

Do you agree with the fact it would be inappropriate for someone who believes in abolishing the age of consent to teach kids?

Do you agree with the fact it's right that BNP members can't serve in the police force, as being a national socialist may prevent you from doing your job properly?

Personally I believe it's also completely inappropriate that a club which takes a strong anti-racism platform and should be open to all in the community to appoint a fascist as our manager.

However it's not even just that he's a fascist - he's chosen to introduce it into his football. He chose to perform nazi salutes - twice - once against Lazio's fiercest rivals with traditionally Jewish support and once against a club with left wing support. That salute was used by those who killed Jews and who killed leftists.

Regarding fascism - I think some of you need to research on what it means. The fascism he is talking about re. Mussolini is not somehow a 'light' fascism that's actually about just being nationalistic. It's about the government controlling every aspect of citizens lives - the term totalitarian was invented under fascist Italy. Mussolini himself said their was no such thing as a private sphere. Fundamental to this belief was that certain races, or groups, are better than others. Mussolini killed 10's of thousands in Africa in brutal & oppressive wars that were purely for the conquest of land and Mussolini personally oversaw the movement of thousands of Jews from Italy to Hitler so they could be executed in concentration camps. He took over the country by force and oppressed political dissent.

There are many children alive today who have no idea who their parents/ grandparents are and it's because of Mussolini.

You can't be an Italian fascist and not be racist in one form or another. You can't have researched Mussolini, chosen to have a tattoo of him on you and not sympathise with some of the genocide he committed- it's simply too much of a defining feature of what he was.

Regarding the 'worked with black players' 'they're my friends' all I would say is that many, many racist people associate with people of other races (it baffles me too; but it's true). Simply saying 'I have black mates' doesn't really do it. I would also observe at Swindon he was investigated for racism and while the FA did nothing Swindon felt it necessary to apologise to the player involved.

Overall I completely respect those fans who choose to keep going but for me unfortunately it's a very sore point and the reason I'm posting this is because I want to make clear many of us who are upset about this aren't going on the TV or papers and aren't making a fuss for the hell of it we are genuinely very upset about this and feel like there has been a betrayal of some higher principle which is more important than success on the field.

Decency still exists on the SMB.

That's a cracking post, has to be the best post ever made on there.

Don't agree. People seriously needs to separate football from politics. FWIW I think Di Canio should have a look at himself if he supports the belief and firm stance that Benito Mussolini apparently had... The opportunist that he was and the left-wing to right-wing switch is really a firm stand. The man clearly knows nothing about his supposed beliefs and should have a look into history books.

We seriously need to thrive for football free from politics, it's beyond ridiculous at times. Di Canio is an ignorant person, but I can bet my house that this man will be as happy as ever if Di Canio wins them a trophy (:p won't happen ).

I'd also like to thank Cajun and TT for getting me to see the great enjoyment that this is.
