I see your point but that day Remy should have had a hat-trick so there's clearly other options than just giving the ball to HBA and seeing what happens.

this is my point

EDIT: all over the place here trying to squeeze replies in - the point is that hull were ripped up a bit then closed HBA and remy down effectively, pardew left HBA on the right to run at 3 men continually, there was no tactical change to exploit the space that should have been left

later on he started playing HBA as a withdrawn forward, like liverpool, but it was clearly not a tactically thought-out move he just threw him on expecting it to work

remy is scoring for fun so i'd expect norwich to mark him tightly next game, what do you think the chances are that we're already working on getting HBA and gouffran to exploit that space effectively?  slim to none for me, it'll either be shola again or HBA right wing "run at 'em son"

The irony in all this is that HBA has been relegated to his role at previous clubs, on the bench when things are going well, but hoyed on desperately to save the fucking team when we're under the cosh. Can see him being used as a wildcard when we're chasing the game at 1-0 down. Complete lack of intelligence and talent from the manager.

he'll not start shola in those 2 games will he, surely?

Dunno to be honest, you would like to think not. We definitely find it more difficult against the teams who defend. HBA seems a must.

we're back to where we started though aren't we?  he hasn't a fucking clue how to use HBA properly

It's a wonder we think he's a good player then, isn't it?

He's used him very well in the past. Even to the point where people would comment that he was in the form of his career. That's slipped recently, but there's not much reason to suspect he can't get back to that level.

Other than the fact he's not getting a game?

I cannot blame Pardew for not starting HBA. He doesn't fit into a solid 4-4-2 which is what he prefers, and, baring a short period a couple of seasons ago, what we've been more effective using.

Under another manager, and maybe with the addition of another player or 2 I could see it working, he'll never be more than a wildcard until that happens though imo.

ahahahahahaha yes, he isn't in the team at the minute, Hans. That will never change. He's never came back from the bench to have an incredible spell of form.

Fuck it, pointless me arguing it. I'll just wait a couple of months until he's won us a couple more games and this will all be forgotten about.

I think descriptors like 'beyond horrific,' inspired no doubt by Tina-Turner starred sequels to terrible dystopian action movies set in Australia are far worse.

 settle down man I misread the comment, canny drastically tbf.

We'll never see him at his best over the course of a full season and beyond is what I meant, we've seen the cycle plenty times before. He'll score a couple of crackers and then be dropped as soon as there's a couple of comparatively poor performances from him and we've looked defensively shaky. This is even more likely if we get a new target man to replace Shola in January.

Two wins and suddenly we can't say what we've been saying for the past 2 years

I don't think he'll ever play at his best, over the course of a full season, regardless of who he's playing under. I'm not sure he has the right mental attributes to sustain that kind of form. That's for another day, though.

you really have no idea

I would just leave it mate, best to make those points after a game where that's how it pans out. Pardew's got his big results that he needed. might as well resign yourself to another season of random football and mid-table mediocrity.

I know you were, you seem to think I'm saying he's a bad player? I'm not, I think he's a talented player playing under an average manager. Being generous with average.

Nah, I don't think, and haven't actually said, that at all. I think he's a supremely talented player, who will struggle with incosistency throughout his career. That, and not any manger, will stop him from playing a performing at the very highest level.

I'll just point it out now to quote it in the future.

The exact people who now brush problems like HBA not being in the team  under the carpet , because we won the games in question, are the same people who brushed all of the problems in the 5th place  season under the carpet because we were winning games then for the most part

It's as if football is so simple to these people that if you win/ are winning everything is pretty much 100% right as rain.

So we've won two very good games with a hard working, plucky 4-4-2 preforming exactly the same way as we did in the season where we finished 5th. Just like then when the football was clearly not sustainable medium/long term,  it is not now.

Shola Ameobi and Obertan getting minutes over HBA? Come on.

If you can't see the problems with getting excited over these two wins after witnessing the last two seasons unfold, I feel for ya bro.

If you do see the problems and are just hoping these issues will be addressed then fair enough, but at this point it's just hope because despite AP winning two admittedly, very tough games - the same problems that have always been there are still there.

I agree to a point. What I think is different is that at his current age he's mature enough to perform consistently but playing under a tactically deficient manager who courts inconsistency he'll never achieve it.

HBA playing under a top manager, even someone like Martinez who knows how to adapt his team to achieve tactical aims going forward, in my opinion he'd excel.

We'll never know.

Tbf, although I hate the style and I'm not sure how sustainable it is (we've gotten some very good results playing it in the past) I'd prefer we stuck with what we're doing now until it starts to fail. Rack up the points if we can.

I love HBA, but why change what's just gotten us our 3 best results in over a year?

I definitely don't want this to be the future like

I think you're massively insulting peoples' intelligence there TBH. Not much that's been said about our problems or lack of them is motivated by a couple of wins, just like everything isn't the apocalypse after a couple of defeats.

What worries me more is that Sunderland players are all coming out in public and saying how they feel more confident in the possession and passing style they are being coached in by Poyet, and their recent results are pretty good as well same as ours, except they've got a squad which looked nailed on for relegation a couple of weeks back. There will be a real sense of hope and progress over there right now, all I am feeling is we're stuck with more hit and miss results with us yo-yo-ing from one style to another depending on our last result.
