A rough calculation shows Wonga's revenues off by 35%. With post-tax margins of 20%, that presents them with a need to rework their business model and will almost certainly result in cost-cutting, so I would not be surprised at all if they exit the sponsorship at the end of this coming season.

Please let this happen.

Donnay would look canny.

These despicable cunts are in for a tough time here in South Africa. One of the senior guys at the National Credit Regulator was on radio today saying that they had a look at Wonga and found that they had not met all the regulatory and documentary requirements for the loans they issued. Probably based on the sample they selected. He was not happy at all and it looks like they going to crack down on Wonga.

Happy days :D

"JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's credit regulator said on Thursday it had ordered the local unit of British payday lender Wonga to improve its compliance, after finding the company did not verify the income of its customers.

The crackdown in South Africa is the latest regulatory hit for Wonga, which has come under criticism in its home market for charging an annual interest rate of 5.853%.

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) said it ordered Wonga to submit an audit report and remove adverse credit bureau listings from some of its customers' records at its own expense.

It also told the short-term lender to rescind judgements taken against clients from whom it had not obtained proof of income and living expenses.

A spokesperson for Wonga said: "We received a Compliance Notice from the National Credit Regulator two weeks ago, which we take very seriously. We reviewed the letter with external advisors, who confirmed our view that we are fully compliant with the relevant rules. We have responded accordingly and requested a meeting. We commit to work with the NCR to resolve any concerns."

Last month Wonga was asked to pay 2.6 million pounds ($4.5 million) in compensation to 45 000 UK customers after sending them bogus letters from non-existent law firms that threatened legal action.

New rules in Britain will cap the interest rates offered by the so-called payday lenders, who say their small loans help tide households over until salaries come in.

First-time Wonga borrowers in South Africa can expect to pay a 27% premium on a 48-day loan of R2 500. Repeat customers can borrow up to R8 000.

South Africa was Wonga's first expansion outside the United Kingdom. The UK business was launched in 2007 by South African founders Errol Damelin and Jonty Hurwitz. Damelin recently stood down as a director. Hurwitz cut his ties in 2011.

South African regulators have said consumers are too steeped in credit, with household debt levels averaging around 75% of disposable income."

Not sure how they can bail out, surely we have a contract for the full £16m over two years so it has to be paid?

Club might want to bail out of it if it can find a better sponsor.

They would be seeing out the second year though

Edit: Seen its a 4 year deal isnt it? No doubt theres an option to leave at the end of each year like we had with the last few.

Not sure they'll be able to find one willing to pay as much with the added bonus of pissing the fans off as much again.

So we're just talking about them not renewing after the 2 years?

EDIT: Articles on about them ditching the sponsorship claiming it was a 4 years deal, thought I remembered it being only 2 years?
