A report from Belgium today suggested that Newcastle were quibbling with Anderlecht over £500,000 to complete a £2.25million deal for Matz Sels after a £1.7million bid was knocked back.

Bought for around £6.5 million from KAA Gent in June 2016. He was given a 5 year contract when NUFC were in the Championship. When he was loaned to Anderlecht he was apparently the highest paid player in the league. So Championship goalkeepers get paid more than any Belgian Pro League players? I don't see why Sels would have been on 'Premiership' wages.

So NUFC are fighting to get £2.25m and have been offered £1.7m (which would be a £4.8m loss on transfer fee paid). Does every top division league apart from England, Spain and Germany really have no money? NUFC buy players and then if they don't work out NUFC get robbed on the transfer fee. A real problem of buying players from lesser leagues is if they aren't a success you're stuck with a player on mega wages who either won't leave or goes for a small transfer fee.

that's just a gamble you take shopping in that market though, unlike other clubs we're simply not willing to take the rough part of the rough/smooth dynamic

It's not just that NUFC don't get anywhere near their money back on transfers. These mid range teams can never seem to scrape together much money for a transfer they want. The Championship teams seem to have a lot more money than most teams from leagues which aren't the top division of Spain or Germany.

Bought Florian Thauvin off Marseille for £15m. Loaned him back to Marseille in the January as they cried poor saying they had no money to buy him back. Buy him in the Summer for £9.8m. Pretty much the same thing happened with Rémy Cabella.

We do a much better job than on neighbours on this front mind, not sure it's really a problem of ours. We've made good profit on quite a few players in recent times where as they seem to lose a ton of money on nearly every player they bring in for a fee.

Literally no comparing us to Sunderland if you're referring to the neighbors. We've made good profit on a handful of players, other than that we're literally struggling off our arses to offload the same group of players over the course of 1+ year - overpaying some of these players to move aboard and then stuck with them as their value plunges. In what world is Sels worth that fee and getting that wages, then unable to go anywhere else for nearly 200% discount on what we bought him for

Seems like we've priced him out of a move to Anderlecht.

He cost £6.5m from KAA Gent but the most Anderlecht would offer was €2m. Do all teams outside the big players in the European leagues (and the Premiership and the Championship) always shop in the bargain bucket? We hear about transfer fees for players coming into the Premiership from abroad but outside of those transfers are all the other clubs paying each other peanuts for players?

Belgian league is very very poor compared to the PL.  We massively overpaid for him, Charnley really wants shooting over this deal and the wages he was put on.

Pretty much for players they know they'll be unlikely to shift on at a big profit. For example if we recouped the £6.5m from then, it'd be the second biggest signing fee in their history.

Apparently NUFC wanted £3m for Sels.

Newcastle United dealt transfer blow as Anderlecht confirm Matz Sels' permanent move is off

Matz Sels had agreed a personal contract with Anderlecht, but the Belgian club could not meet Newcastle United's demands

By Chris Waugh

Newcastle United have been dealt a blow with the confirmation that Matz Sels ’ permanent move to Anderlecht has broken down.

Reports in Belgium earlier in the week claimed Sels was left “deeply disappointed” by Newcastle’s failure to agree a price with Anderlecht.

Now the Jupiler League club’s sporting director has confirmed that the Magpies’ asking price became “too big” and so Anderlecht will instead pursue other targets.

Rafa Benitez knows he must reduce Newcastle’s wage bill this summer in order to free up space for new players’ salaries - with Sels and Chancel Mbemba identified as two Magpies he must move on, with Massadio Haidara and Jesus Gamez set to be released at the end of the month, too.

The Magpies had the highest-ever wage budget the EFL has ever seen in 2016/17, and it remained inflated in the Premier League last season too.

Part of the problem was that Newcastle were forced to partially subsidise the wages of a number of players they sent out on loan, and instead they must look to offload them permanently during this window.

One of those players is Sels, who it is understood had agreed a long-term contract with Anderlecht - but the Belgian outfit were unwilling to meet Newcastle’s £3million asking price for the shot-stopper.

The Belgian club began pre-season training this week, where managing director Luc Devore confirmed Thomas Didillon and Frank Boeckx would be his goalkeeper options this season - and stressed Sels would not become a permanent Anderlecht employee, unless Newcastle reduce their financial demands.

“If more than 10 new players have to be added, we cannot spend too much on one player”, Devroe told Voetbalkrant.

“The financial picture for the Sels transfer became too big, so Boeckx and Didillon will compete for the spot under the bar.”
