Went to Berwick Rangers v East Stirling yesterday. 2 former football league teams who've sadly hit hard times. Berwick were diabolical, which has been the case every time I've seen them, and that's 2 loses from 2 with 0 goals scored and 7 conceded since the new manager took over, but as usual the hospitality was spot on and we had another very enjoyable day.

FT Berwick 0-4 East Stirling

Attendance 412

Tough times for Berwick, it's hard to see how they can run that stadium getting 412 in but it's quite expensive entry and I suppose the speedway must bring a bit in.

Spennymoor through to the quarter final of the FA Trophy with a pens win at home to Boston, they were 0-2 down, but drew 2-2. Boston are a league above after getting promoted last year, but are in the relegation zone, and Spenny were slight faves to advance, but a great achievement to make the last 8 when you have all the National Premier teams involved. QF draw tomorrow.

Crook and North Shields both lost in the FA Vase, so a 5th successive year with no Northern League representation in the final (or even QF this year) after largely dominating the previous 12 years. Probably to do with all the promotions to the NPL in recent years and so many stronger sides (and players) leaving the Northern League.

It's a tenner for adults and U16s are free so not bad at all really. They seem to do pretty well with things like sponsorships etc. Reading through the programme I think just about every player has a sponsors and they seem to do really well with their corporate hospitality as it's always packed in there and must bring in a few quid.

I think a bigger problem for them is Geography. There's quite a small pool of players to choose from. Just a bit too far north to attract Northern League players without having to pay well over the odds to compensate for the extra travelling. I'm told they have quite a few players from Edinburgh and that they actually train up that way as well.

I've thought this should be the case for absolutely ages. The season when it was Wrexham and Notts County neck and neck all year about 20 points ahead of the rest highlighted how mental it was that only first place gets automatic promotion.

I know the point of play-off places is to give teams a chance to go up without having the best side in the league but you had Notts Co in second place on 107 points in the playoffs whilst 7th placed Bromley were in there with 71, it was a bit ridiculous.

My best mate's nephew. Plays as a centre-mid - had injury problems this season though. Think he's around 20 years old.

in other news, Blyth lost again on Tuesday night. 1-0 at home to Stockton Town. :(

Top class coupon busting win for Alnwick last night against high flying Jarra. Great game and we were frankly fucking brilliant. Really hoping we can survive in NL Division 2 now, there are definitely three worse teams (and realistically only a couple are likely to be relegated)

Getting biffed 3-blanc HT in a league cup against higher league Shildon (who I'm told might be even higher than NL div 1 but demoted on ground restrictions). Great ground but the music man :anguish:

Heaton 4-1 up now against Bradford (PA). Match was delayed about 20 mins at half time due to waiting for a new linesman. Looking like back to back wins after beating Dunston on Friday night.

They've given themselves a good chance as they had won only 1 in about 16 prior to this mini revival. It would be nice if Ashington, Consett and Heaton all stayed up, but 4 teams do go down and it's very tight between 8 or 9 teams.

I was there against Dunston and last night, and they really seem to have turned a corner. They've brought in quite a few new players who seem to be working now, have a bit more pace in the team, and Connor Walker is flying in midfield. The lad they've just signed from Whitley Bay was immense last night too.

Ashington won 2-1 at Bishop Auckland on Tuesday night, IIRC. Looks like they may well be stopping up due to improved recent form.

Big derby's with Blyth Spartans look on the cards, next season. Decades since that happened in the league, I guess. Probs late 70's/early 80's?

Some important matches in this league today.

ASHINGTON vs Brighouse

Sherwood vs HEATON

Liversedge vs Pontefract

Bishop Auckland (currently 11th, so just off this table) are away to Ossett, Consett away to Bradford PA, and Dunston home to Bridlington.

Some cracking latest scores in the NPLE - Ashington were behind early, but now lead 3-1, Consett 3-0 up, Heaton 2-0 up, Dunston beating a relegation threatended side, even Bishop Auckland a goal up, so 5 of the 6 leading and Newton Ayc have levelled their match.

Ashington W 4-1

Consett W 3-1

Dunston W 3-2

Heaton W 2-0

Newton Ayc 3-3

Bishops 1-1

Great collective set of results, especially for the 3 strugglers. 3 wins in a row for Heaton, definitely looks like they have turned a corner with those aforementioned signings. Could be looking at NINE teams in that league next year if they all stay up. 9 of 22 from the old Northern League would be fantastic and great for crowds / travel / playing matches on Friday night etc.
