Worst ever Newcastle midfielder?

Recommended Posts

Ray Clarke, Billy Rafferty, Frank Pingel & Rob McDonald were different level shitness compared to Joselu. Then you've got some of the nowhere near good enough yound lads that didn't make the grade....Paul Brayson, Anth Lormor and Steve Howey etc, although he made an excellent defender eventually.

Modern days I'd say de Jong, Riviere and Ranger were all far inferior to the Hoss.

Honorable mentions to Kuqi, Smith and Andreas Andersson.

Andersson was a weird one, I think Shearer even recommended him to Daggers as an ideal strike partner, played for Milan and cost reasonable money for the time (around 3.5m?).

Missed Clarke and Rafferty, before my time. What about Shinton? Wasn't he top scorer one year with about 4?

Also scored against the big clubs away too. Weird one. Sure he nearly scored a stunner on his debut.

Scored in a 1-1 at Man Utd and a 1-1 at Chelsea, also scored at Liverpool. Was playing in the era right after I moved away so I didn't see him play live much. Maybe it was the daft hair? injuries? a perceived lack of heart?

Double-checking the records, he didn't score many like, about 5 across 2 seasons

80-81 season, which was about as grim as I've ever seen us, he finished top scorer with 7. I had a badge which I bought in the Kard Bar that said 'Bobby Shinton's more slippery than a frog's belly'. Great times.

The great man himself used to come down my street every Wednesday in his sponsored Ford Escort, to drop his pools money off at the Littlewoods agent in our street. How times have changed. :mike:

Guivarch shirley

He's up there. I remember settling down to watch the 98 world cup with so much excitement to see this striker we'd just signed, top scorer in France and leading the line for his country at the WC. He was shite. I thought, just an aberration, he'll be good for us. He did trundle one in off the post against Liverpool in a 4-1 defeat so not all bad like!

Was he actually bad or just not fancied? I remember watching Gullit in the studio as a pundit during the WC 98 and he was slagging him off...2 months later he’d inherited him.

I know he was crap during the World Cup but we barely saw him for Newcastle to call shite. Pretty sure he started in the 5-1 win at Coventry for instance.

Dillon, FFS. The late 80's/early 90's Alan Smith. :???: :D

There was one bloke who I ended up standing near in the Gallowgate Corner most home games. Constantly yelled "Dillon, get off!!!", pretty much every time he touched the ball. Was moderately amusing the first time I heard it, but by about March, the novelty had worn off like

That was my mate Neil, had a laugh like Basil Brush, hated Kevin Dillon with a passion.

Gullit didn't fancy him at all, which is why he was packed off to Rangers in the blink of an eye.

Scored on his debut then sacked off after only 4 games IIRC.

I went out with his cousin for a couple of years, who worked at Newcastle University........she said he was a right arrogant prick and couldn't stand him.

You could tell, swear Dillon heard him one time when he yelled as he was taking a corner

'kinell, can't believe someone else remembers this 30 years on

I remember stuff like this better than what happened yesterday. Going to the match was class in those days, even though we were largely shite.

Yer right like, cheap as chips and a right laugh standing with your mates. Those days are loooooong gone sadly.

A lot of the stuff already mentioned really chimes with me.

I was at the Barnsley "Ranson and Fereday" game, remember Fumaca's "interesting" take on football and still can picture the like of Mavis Riley and Rob McDonald disgracing our no 9 shirt, but it was all a good laugh in those days.

He was rotten for France during WC98 and yet they kept persisting with him.

Faded memory but seem to recall watching that World Cup and in nearly every game he was subbed for Dugarry. Could be wrong, like.

EDIT:

 • First group game vs South Africa - taken off for Dugarry after 26 mins
 • Second group game vs Saudi Arabia - didn't feature
 • Third group game vs Denmark - brought on for Trezeguet after 85 mins
 • Round of 16 vs Paraguay - brought on for Bernard Diomede after 76 mins
 • Quarter final vs Italy - taken off for Trezeguet or Henry after 65 mins (double sub)
 • Semi final vs Croatia - taken off for Trezeguet after 65 mins
 • Final vs Brazil - taken off for Dugarry after 66 mins

Not quite as I thought, but unimpressive nonetheless!

There's probably a better thread for these types of reminiscences but did you happen to go to that Blackpool cup game in 87, probably around September time? We got beat 1-0, but I never went to even those types of games expecting much, it was for the craic and being with your mates mostly.

Anyway, I remember Gazza getting dogs abuse when he tried to clap the fans at the end but the funniest memory from that is this lad turning around furious as the whistle went, face the colour of blackcurrant jam, shouting "The Chronicle back page headline tomorrow should be "FUCKING SHIT!!"". It was hilarious at the time, the thought of a newspaper using profanity as their headline but it had been that bad

Didn't go to many aways in those days so no, but was at the home leg. Seem to remember we won that game convincingly, so no doubt we went out without a whimper in the next round.

For me, I knew Riviere would be bad. The price tag, his record in other countries, etc. it was bananas when he started doing backflips when he scored his first goal like 30 games into the season. He was just out of his depth. But Joselu for the chances he has missed has to be the worst striker. I feel like we’re a side that do make chances. And he would miss them. He also just never seems to be in the right place. Positioning is off, he just doesn't do anything. Think he missed a penalty. Feel like the moment is made for him and he fails to deliver.

It's a real insult to Joselu to compare him with Riviere, the former's just a bit crap, the latter was absolutely hopeless.

 Does my head in considering Riviere wasn't even that long ago. Can only assume people are repressing what the Riviere experience was actually like.

There was someone similar in the a paddock, hated Dillon with a passion. Completely forgot he was the corner taker

He also hated Stimson as well, gave him dogs abuse whenever he was taking a throw in.

I seem to remember Ranson improving?? Or is that just my bad memory?

Lion of Gosforth. It was actually my first ever away game. Have always loved a trip to Ewood, since. :)

Was a canny away day in that era, decent bars nearby, always a big following but mixed results on the pitch to say the least. Went 3 times 89-92 and we were shite each time but still, as a youngun, you enjoyed yourself anyway. Probably saw you with the cone on yer nappa that day

Good job you didn’t try the cone thing at Wolves, my mate tripped over a traffic cone sometime around early 90’s and was arrested by West Midlands finest.

I remember sleeping out for Blackburn FACup tickets in early ‘93. First in the queue and before the game someone decided to climb the old stand when they had taken the roof off at Ewood.

Kevin Dillon

That Blackburn cup game was one of my first aways at 13, remember the bloke on the Darren roof vividly.

I also remember Roy Wegerle’s last minute winner.
