Came into the bar after and was sound as fuck. RIP big man. Sheffield legend. Edited Sunday at 20:36 by La Parka
Dr.Spaceman Posted Sunday at 20:47 Share Posted Sunday at 20:47 That image of him stopping Roy Keane going ballistic is iconic. May have been a bit erratic as a ref but he was a little different in the sense that he'd get hands on like that from time to time. Was he the guy who sent Shearer off at Charlton? Dr.Spaceman Posted Sunday at 20:51 Share Posted Sunday at 20:51 Ah, I knew he had sent him off, D'urso gave the Charlton red that was rescinded.
M4 Posted Sunday at 21:38 Share Posted Sunday at 21:38 Contentious guy for us Newcastle fans I suppose. But in hindsight, his Shearer red card set the wheels in motion that season that eventually got Sir Bobby in. One of those iconic figures from early Premier League football. BlazeT44 Posted Sunday at 23:36 Share Posted Sunday at 23:36 RIP. He's been battling serious health issues in recent times. On a personal note, I once met Uriah Rennie referring a charity game I played in at Sheffield FC. In all honesty I can't say it was a pleasure, but saddened to hear he's passed at what is a relatively young age. Despite how he came across that day, he's certainly someone who broke the mould for a lot of young referees (and across football in general)
La Parka Posted yesterday at 09:06 Share Posted yesterday at 09:06 (edited) He had a neurological disorder didn't he? Last I saw he was in a wheelchair. Can not have been easy being the first black ref. Can't imagine what he had to put up with throughout his career. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Your-Show-Ashley-Hickson-Lovence/dp/0571366791 There's a novelisation of his life here. Not read it but might see if the library will get it in for me. Edited yesterday at 09:08 by La Parka
