jackflap
Deserves credit after an excellent performance but with Botman and Trippier out it's more a case of stumbling upon our best back 4. When those 2 are back it'll be interesting to see what lessons have been learnt.

Displayname
I mean, he dropped Botman before he got injured. Dunno about Trippier, feels like Tino has part of the starting XI for quite a while now whenever he has been available. So not really worried about that. I am worried that he thinks Burn+Trippier is sufficient cover for the FBs and that we won't get somebody in January though.

The defence hasn't really been the problem this year though, sure it's sucked that both Hall and Livramento has been out. But the main issue all year has been the abject performances of the wingers and midfield 3. Tonali and Bruno have performed well individually at different times but as a team it hasn't worked. I said this yesterday but I don't particularly care who Thiaw's partner is, they're all good players but it's a small thing compared to getting the midfield right. That's been the biggest change in last two PL games to me, obviously snowballed from having both fullbacks fit.
jackflap
Going by past selections this season it would've been either Burn out Tino are LB. Hopefully it'll be like last season where it was around this time Longstaff was finally jettisoned for Tonali after the Brentford game and we never looked back. But it's been a few occasions now where Howe is very slow to cop onto going with whats very obviously the best set up. It was Hall 2 seasons ago, Tonali last season and now Hall again. Lush Vlad
Hall’s minutes have been managed because he was coming back from a serious injury. Then got injured again. It hasn’t been because he isn’t first choice. No chance Howe thinks Trippier right back and Tino left back or Tino at RB and Burn at LB. Are better options than playing Hall there. He was on for our player of the season last year until he got injured at Anfield.

I'd argue having Hall and Livramento made everyone's jobs easier and created more space around the pitch. The field looked noticeably bigger with the way they could stretch it. They kept forcing Everton players into making decisions of who to cover and we looked really difficult to play against. One of my biggest gripes before was how compressed everything was around the middle 3rd of the pitch and we looked very easy to defend against. I mean yes,I was really saying that stumbling upon the correct back 4 won't be as big if the midfield and wingers didn't do their job. It's obviously made things easier but I think the choices Howe has made in the midfield (including the wingers) both games were also very impactful. Lucky
The drop off between some players is perhaps not as severe as it seems at times. We seem to have found a bit of power back in the side, but that won’t last if he starts picking the same team week in week out. Midfield is crucial in that sense. On last nights evidence, Miley is an able deputy for either Bruno or Tonali. Willock looks almost fit again and Ramsey still settling in although yet to impose on a game, but again, either can step in for Big Joe. Curious to see if Miley can gel with both Bruno and Tonali in the side. That may be our strongest midfield now?

There’s another way of looking at this. Howe is very cautious, in general. Part of that is being cautious with morale. He will only make changes when he’s thought it through/discussed it with players. Plenty of players have talked about how one of his strengths is making everyone feel valued and part of something. What he’s doing is considered. Him and his coaching staff see more then we do.
Tiresias
I think it is definitely an area he needs to get better on, rotation that is. The thing of it is that for instance the swap of tonali and bruno the other week made a big difference, when such tiny tweaks can be difference between a win and a loss rotating the whole squad around can feel a huge risk, if you have a settled 11 you sort of know what you are going to get. Certainly coaches of the big teams sort this by intensely drilling into players their duties making them somewhat robots who follow specific instructions. I'm not sure that is quite Howe's style, but if we want to compete on all fronts things need to be learned.
The Prophet
Re rotation, I'd say... He has been rotating far more this season, probably because we now have the squad to do so. Most managers don't rotate their main men very often.

I dont particularly enjoy players drilled into being identical either. Bleh. I am not trying to be critical it just seems we can't play consistently the same no matter the personnel (and in truth no team really can but we are fluctuating in levels too much)

Livramento could easily see his pathway into the 1st team, given Trippier's age, but that's not the case now. It's a good problem to have but just not sure how you solve having good back-up options. (whispers) their path into the first team is Livramento/Hall eventually being sold to bigger clubs.
Holloway
Snidey question put to him in the post match presser. 'would Nick Pope have played had he not been injured', Eddie just said 'nice try' then went on to explain that both keepers had very different strengths. He did look a bit pensive and fidgety mind, was a bit surprised at that

Yep. Livramento is the more likely of the two to be off first, but no-one should assume they’re here forever - which should be encouragement to other young fullbacks being signed.
