Slot not leaving in the summer. Could be a great opportunity to upgrade to Alonso in the summer.

Is this something that is in the media as my money would be on them giving him the boot.
Especially if they don't qualify for the CL or win either the FA Cup or CL.

Hard to say, he'd need a lot of turnover in the market to play his style though.

Personally don’t think Alonso would cross our radar, if we did lose Howe.

Just reported today, board blaming injuries and high turnover of players on this season’s performance.

I'd still be surprised if they end the season with no trophies and No CL.
I am so torn as I want them to finish with nowt, but then I want Slot to stay

Don’t think he’d cross ours either Alonso.  I think out of all the possibilities Iraola is an interesting potential.  Think he’s done a great job at Bournemouth and plays a style suited to Newcastle, and a 4-2-3-1 which we need to transition to imo. Would he be better than Howe though is no guarantee

I actually think he would be, especially if slots job is safe. We should be very attractive to a manager of his profile tbh.

On a unrelated note, I do wonder how much "not knowing" will be a factor for the ownership. I imagine Eddie gets us back into some form of Europe next season (if we don't qualify this season) which means you essentially can't judge him for 18 months. That is problematic if you have a 2030 plan.

Not sure he’s an upgrade.

Hmm took Bayern Leverkusen from relegation places (17th) to winning a treble and the first ever invincible season in Bundesliga history. Something Bayern couldn’t even achieve with all its relative wealth.

Moved to Real Madrid and has the fourth highest win percentage in RM history. He basically got kicked out as the players don’t like getting told what to do.

Do people on here really think Howe is an upgrade on Alonso?

Fourth highest win percentage in how many games though [emoji38]

I’d love to see Alonso or Fabregas here purely just to have someone else try and change our style of play.

My main gripe for the last 20 odd years has been how easy we are to play against. Eddie changed that slightly for a while, but it’s coming back around again. If you’re an opposition team that badly needs some points or in a poor run of form, we’re the team that you want to play, it just makes me angry at how predictable that can be

Leverkusen>NUFC?

Not even close. Leverkusen are considered a small "factory" team in Germany. They'd never won the league before until Alonso tipped up and had only won the German Cup once as well until he won them their 2nd. Small fanbase as well. I've been to watch them twice in the Bundesliga and on both occasions the crowd was only 25k. Even Koln which is only a few miles away don't see them as serous rivals.

I mean I can understand why some would want to stick with Howe, even if Alonso would come, but trying to play down his achievements feels a bit petty. He’s had a brilliant start to his managerial career.

And to put it this way, if one of the big clubs had the option of Alonso or Howe, they’d all pick Alonso.

Not sure anyone has played down his achievements, just don’t think it’s a guarantee he’s better than Howe.

I am sure no one would deny what Alonso did at Leverkusen was truly remarkable.

There can always be a small element of it just being a perfect coming together of every element (good manager, right combination of players), just at the right time (bit Leicester-ish) and I would like to see what Alonso does next to see of he is truly capable of brilliance everywhere, rather than not just a true moment of perfection at Leverkusen.

Certainly, his first foray into management elsewhere wasn't good and maybe is suggestive of him not being able to make the step up.

The main negative of an Alonso reign would just be the media constantly acting like it was a warm up to taking the Liverpool job, especially if he had success here.

Suppose that’s one of the reasons (not the only) why I’m still wanting to stick with Howe. He seems committed to this club and seems to want to make his legacy at this club. Alonso and/or Fabregas could be great but would probably just be transitory presences here.

Not a valid excuse for a lot of people for some reason

Absolutely, no guarantees of anything honestly.

This summer is going to be mental and we will get the answers to all of our questions in due time even if we have to read between the lines.

Of course. There are never guarantees. We’re going to a new team next year given the changes that will happen. Even if Alonso were to come in and we had an average season next year, there’s no guarantees Howe would have done any better. The decision isn’t an easy one.

No guarantees but Howe has success with us. Especially in seasons without a European campaign.

Two Champions League campaigns, two finals and a trophy, in his short time here.  Is nothing to be sniffed at.

I wouldn't say it wasn't good. He wasn't really there long enough.
