He steps up and cuts out passes to the forwards very well I'd say he's more of a goal threat on set pieces aswell, his passing range is far better. Burn has size heart and effort on his side. He's a solid premier league defender.

Burn doesn't have Botman's range of passing. Also, tbf I thought some of Botman's defensive work against Leeds, Burn couldn't have replicated. But there was some headers that Burn won that I think Botman wouldn't have been so certain of.

Having a laugh? No. Botman more of a goal threat? He's scored twice for Newcastle. Burn without checking has much more. And in terms of cutting out passes to forwards with aggressive interceptions, all of our centre backs do it, both Burn and Schar extremely effectively.

Nothing you have said clearly shows me Botman is a better defender at present than Burn, mainly because he isn't.

Botman wasn't very good against Leeds other than the first 5 minutes, he put us in trouble with terrible defensive headers 2 or 3 times.

If you can get Botman 22/3 fit then there's no contest, that's not being critical of Burn either.

Burn and schar try and cut the ball out and normally have left us wide open. Burn has played a shit ton of games more than botman and hasn't scored many off set pieces and he's a monster.

Well, I'll put it this way, if we were playing a final tomorrow, with a back 4 of Livramento, Schar, Burn or Botman and Hall. I'm choosing Burn every single time, no contest.

It's not just about that though, Burn offers the full package. Fierce leadership, immaculate defensive work, blood and thunder when it's needed and calmness and pacification when it's needed. 

He's not just some passion merchant. He's absolutely invaluable and a key player for us.

We saw the Leeds performance differently then which is fine. I saw a player who about 3 times in the space of 20 minutes headed the ball without any distance or conviction on it straight to the edge of our box to Leeds players in space. If he does that against a better attacking outfit than Leeds, Pope is tested 3 times in those situations. He was rusty, that's fine, it certainly wasn't a vintage Botman performance and out of the 3 centre backs on the pitch, he was rightly the one sacrificed for an attacking substitution.

Botman seems to be quite cool with Isak forcibly breaking his contract.

 

Given his injury record, I wonder if he'd be so relaxed about clubs having the same freedom when players stop being useful.

Thought he did a fantastic header from a fast diagonal ball from the right, he got across his man and put a firm head on it then sent it away from the box. Burn wouldn't have the mobility for that. 

Botman did struggle a bit with some high balls though. Thought that was unusual for him. Hopefully it will come  back.

I don’t really think in terms of proving fitness - sometimes you’re injured and sometimes you’re fit. Of course it will be better when he’s been fit for a longer period. 

 

I love Sven but if you were to ask me to rank our best ever defenders then both Burn and Schar are ahead of him for me
