What asworth said was along the lines of “I don’t talk about specific player’s contracts but sometimes a release clause can be only for some clubs”

 

(unless I was drunk)

 

Nothing has been confirmed either way unless I’ve missed something.  Having said that, I’m certain that there will be people who know the details. I don’t see it being only clubs outside of PL for example, no chance.

Ashworth implied that only certain clubs or clubs in certain counties could activate the clause, but he was talking in hypotheticals and it was never confirmed.

Given what's gone on it was probably Ashworth scribbling Man United on the contract after it had been signed...
