Rich
I’d be happy enough just keeping Lascelles for now, if he’s happy in the role he’s currently performing. I might be totally clouded by optimism, though. Think it could be at least a season too early to sign a Botman type who would probably expect to play every game fairly sharpish. If we can't get a "top target" for the RCB role. I.e a young player to come in and compete with Schar and eventually take his place, we could do the opposite and sign an experienced player who's been outstanding this season. Dunk is a better CB than Dan Burn, he's experienced, excellent on the ball, another absolute unit, plays in a very similar system and wouldn't cost alot of money. It would be effectively kicking the CB can down the road for a season but it would allow us to keep our powder dry if there are financial constraints. Before anyone goes wild, it's just a different suggestion/strategy to explore. He's the same age as Fabian Schar though, so not sure I understand the thinking. Also, Brighton are likely to ask for a fee that is likely to be similar to what we will spend on a younger CB. I think we'll just spend to get in Botman's future partner. We've been linked with Danso at Lens (who is home grown as he was at MK Dons when he was younger) and Djalo at Lille who played with Botman when he was there. Both would cost around £20 million to £30 million I imagine. Edited April 9, 2023 by KaKa

Either him or Schar would be sitting on the bench for most of the season. Signing a defender slightly past it I would get like, but Dunk isn’t near that stage yet. Likely going to be in Europe and so we could definitely do with a younger CB to rotate with Schar as he is getting on now.
STM
He's 31, we are going to have to rotate our squad massively next year with European football. He'd get loads of games.
STM
Was thinking he would cost less than 20m. A young CB of Botmans ilk is going to cost 30+ IMO.
joeyt
Why would Brighton sell him to us for less than £20mil?

Can't see Brighton selling him for less than £20 million. Add another £10 million to that and we could easily find another younger CB in the Botman mould on the continent. Danso, Djalo, Lacroix just some examples that have been linked to us at around that £30 million price.

It’s exactly what you want on paper but I don’t know if it’s as easy to pull off in reality. An ageing defender who’s lost his place in a good side I could see. SUPERTOON
In terms of young CBs we are being quite strongly linked with Taylor Harwood-Bellis from city, had impressed on loan at Burnley this season by all accounts.
STM
Yeah fair point guys. Just a different angle of attack I thought I'd put forward. I'd like to think the club are exploring various options and ideas.
STM
Besides which, if we are raiding Brighton... it needs to be Mitoma, Ferguson, Caicedo or MacAllister.
Guest
We could probably get Roger Ibanez for 20m if big Jose wants to do us a favour

Yeah, saw that the other day. Looks like he will be at Burnley again on loan next season though. Not sure Man City will be looking to sell him. We seem to be looking at a lot of those younger right footed CBs and a good number seem to be available for a decent fee that isn't extortionate. That's interesting. Just had a look and he's going into the last year of his contract this summer now, and so he could well have to be sold if he doesn't want to sign. Link makes a lot more sense now as he seems to have done really well for Burnley and is highly rated. Another possibility there then and the fee would not be crazy due to the circumstances. The College Dropout
I love Zaha but he doesn’t seem to have the work rate of an Eddie Howe winger.

Interesting to see how Burnley cope next year when they are limited in the amount of domestic loans they are allowed and they'll have to focus their recruitment wider than just signing Belgium based players

He has scored 6 goals this season - that isn't a great return for a forward.

He’s hit double figures in 3 of the last 4 seasons in an average Palace side who struggle to score goals. Dropped a bit this season but has missed large parts through injury. I don't mind Lascelles but I think we're asking for trouble if we're going to have to start relying on him to start games regularly, which we probably would do if we didn't sign someone else. For every Man City, where he was good, there's a Sheff Wed, where he was hopeless. Getting him out of the team was also very urgent business in Jan '22. CB is arguably priority number one for me in the summer tbh. I think we can accept that our league campaign is probably going to take a hit next season given European involvement, but the thing that will impact harder is inadequate defenders coming in, moreso than less effective attackers, imo. One of Schar or Botman getting an early season injury wouldn't bear thinking about Obviously it would have to be someone who is prepared to compete. STM
In terms of recruitment, we should try and look at things through this lense: "which injury would cost us the most?" Right now Bruno is the player which is irreplaceable. We'd be a different prospect with someone who has anywhere near Brunos quality in the middle. It doesn't matter if DM or AM, just someone with real quality. Palhinha would be my choice. After that, I think it's CB. We lose Schar or Botman and we are down to Burn or worse Lascelles. Therefore a RCB is next in line. 3rd on the list, I think we need to look for a striker/versatile forward. If Isak gets a layoff, we are down to Wilson on his own, with noone on the bench. Look how many points we've gained from having impactful subs. We need a 3rd option.
