Just turned this on for the second half, Jesus wept I forget just how shite Maguire is.  How Southgate is still picking some of these is beyond me - almost as if he’s a failed second division manager.

Exactly.

It's frustrating as fuck.

Awful pass, terrible challenge and then miles out of position - hideous from Maguire again.

Absolute carthorse, poor touch, nearly kills Barella with a terrible tackle because his touch is so poor then totally out of position while Italy score. Bloke playing like he's concussed.

So Phillips and Rice are meant to be the double pivot with Bellingham as the 10? Think it should be Rice and Bellingham as the two 6’s with someone like Maddison as the 10 as he always looks to and can receive the ball under pressure.

This quote boils my piss.  It's the argument given for Pickford.  He has been at best average this season but mostly pretty crap. However people like you will say he plays great for England.  How on earth are other English players supposed to get a cap?  It makes the selection process a mockery.

It's barely an argument tbh, if players play well for England it stands to reason that they'll get picked, if they don't they won't.

This idea that club form is the be-all-and-end-all is the wrong way around imo. Look at Pope, undoubtedly the best 'keeper in the league this season, would fully deserve to be England number one on club form - comes in, immediately fucks up playing for England. So do you continue playing him because he's been class for Newcastle? Or play Pickford who's not been as good at Everton but has been consistently solid for England for years? It should be obvious, you play the player who plays well for England, every time.
