Kid Icarus Posted October 25, 2025 Share Posted October 25, 2025 (edited) Taking the knee has become exactly what we thought it would end up being 5 years ago when it was co-opted by the very institutions it was brought in to fight against - A completely empty gesture that means nothing to anyone anymore and takes more bravery to not do than to do, the reverse of when Kaepernick did it. Call me cynical for thinking that it was co-opted in order to deliberately dilute its meaning, to turn it into an act of meaningless virtue signalling and to see it more as corporate wokeism that annoys more people than it inspires than an act of genuine meaning and bravery. Don't disagree with you necessarily about corporations cynically co-opting things for public image (while still investing in settler communities), but sitting through a national anthem every damn game is orders of magnitude worse than players taking a knee for a minute. I think everyone knows about the issue of racism. Any decent person is not racist and those that are, are unlikely to change. So I think taking the knee is a waste of time. So to answer your question the idea of saying ‘look at us taking the knee and remember not to be racist’ has become repetitive and possibly irritating to any reasonably intelligent person - that’s why people boo. I’d be more in favour of having ‘taking the knee’ before international games as countries outside of Europe have a far greater problem with racism than we do. I'm sorry but booing suggests a bit more than that. The hypocrisy of those in power wh cheerlead the stop racism campaign in football is more of an issue, as many wanted Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters to come to Birmingham after causing a riot in the derby the weekend before, and after causing trouble everywhere they go with their "Death to Arabs" chants is much more of an issue than the act of players taking a knee. I think the bottom line is that no matter what reason you have for finding it annoying (some of which will admittedly be just conscious or unconscious racism), it's still annoying. We don't sing the national anthem in our matches here, albeit I do definitely take that point about nationalism more broadly. Should be an automatic s/t cancellation imo. Yes it's a bit sloppy at times but they've played midweek and frankly they always give their best this squad and have for years. If anyone genuinely thinks a few misplaced passes are worth booing then please do fuck right off and don't hurry back.
