Obviously a lot would depend on the opposition and/or how the team was performing as it does now..

Man city, Sheff wed, Chelsea, Barnsley always spring to mind as good home games for atmosphere. And probably the anticipation of potential shenanigans after the game helped drive enthusiasm..Orient, Grimsby and Cambridge not so… 

 

If proper, well thought out singing ends and atmosphere etc aren’t a priority for the club, nothing will change… pay for your ticket, buy as much food and drink as possible and enjoy the show….

I suppose that depends who you went with I can't remember many drab outings from those days,even though many of the games were drab affairs. The whole experience for me was filled with aggressive Geordie wit and gallows humour

Aye there was wit, humour, and laughter with like minded mates.. basically an all day event with great times in the leazes and corner… my point being about actual match atmosphere… it definitely wasn’t great for every one I attended..

I was in the Leazes until they closed it, it always sounded deafening to me and it was such a spiky experience with rival groups of lads mouthing off etc. When we moved to the Gallowgate it wasn't as intense with it being without a roof,but it was still good compared to nowadays,there was good banter between the corner and scoreboard, and the seated ends used to make a racket stamping their feet when things got exciting.It's a different world now,completely sanitised but that has happened nationwide it's a bit fucking grim for the old school

The problem we have is that none of the fan organisations appear to be really pushing the atmosphere problem, I’ve seen NUSC mention it in dispatches but it’s not enough we need some real fan pressure.

 

A new stadium for us and I think progress is being made on that front behind the scenes, needs to be priced correctly, or will be a white elephant.

Still find it unbelievable that we’ve made all the away end safe standing, which is basically assisting the away atmosphere at the expense of home advantage.

 

This should be the angle we take with the club and it’s completely shafting ourselves in terms of backing the lads.

 

If there’s a delay due to stadium situation being up in the air, that’s totally unacceptable due to timeframe and the fact where making temporary improvements at the training ground in the interim.

 

Sure there’s no uplift in terms of finances but the match day experience is becoming a real issue, which could have a financial impact. Where not a tourist club and still rely on our support within the region to fill SJP.

Still annoyed about the safe standing workshop a few years back.

 

Their mind was made up and it was all lip service. I put forward many on this forum’s viewpoint to have a L4 and L7 ‘mega corner’ to oppose the noise generated from thr Stawberry Corner. Effectively creating two ‘ends’ - as well as maintaining the spiritual end of the Leazes. Add into this that the majority of ticket holders in L4 and L7 aren’t ST holders. I also made the point that if people REALLY want to stand they’ll move. If you keep it solely in the Strawberry Corner - those who want to be part of an atmosphere rather than generate it are never going to give up what is arguably one of the best views in the stadium along with the easiest access in and out of the ground with proximity to the majority of pubs and bars (pre digital ticket shenanigans).

 

I emailed the FAB last night as there is a vacant seat. I will die on this hill

Shame that never got off the ground cos the combined capacity of the NW corner (I'd have gone the whole hog and thrown in L2 as well) would be almost 6,500 and that would have been a real game changer in terms of atmosphere when you think the Strawberry Corner only holds around 1,800. Almost 8,500 fans stood in opposite corners would have made a fair old racket.

And it’s within earshot of the away fans.
 

One of the best things about Curva Nord was away fans right next door to us and that fuelled the atmosphere.

I find people can only interpret a song one way. "Newcastle United will never be defeated"  is a classic one of a similar vein. We have obviously just been defeated by the Mackems in that particular battle or game, but the song is philosophical. It harkens more to the fact that sure, we might lose a game but we will never surrender or ultimately be worn to extinction. To use "Who's that team..." in a similar vein - it doesn't have to be the literal meaning and analysis of a situation it can be theoretical and ideological. This is what we will get behind and be behind and stay behind. It acts as a reminder and not just simply bravado or chest pumping.

My season ticket was in the balcony bit but right on the divide between us and the away fans and with it being a big day out for the other teams they usually filled their allocation so I was literally just a few feet away from them. The banter was exceptional. Absolutely loved it up there. Was gutted when the fat Cockney rapist ruined it.

My best memory of Curva Nord was at half time, can’t remember who we were playing, when a middle aged couple reached into a carrier bag and unveiled 2 x packs of vacuum sealed hotdogs and they ripped each of the packs open and just started munching away together as if eating cold vacuum packed hotdogs in the singing section of a football stadium was completely normal.

 

I’ve always liked to think they were on a first date and she’d sorted the scran.

It was an away end at home. In exactly the same stadium we have now. Not harking back to bygone eras. 

 

The “we don’t care about Ashley” chant that would just go on for ages, everyone in unison, it was relentless.
 

It shows what can be achieved in the current stadium if they would let us.
