As Eddie says, judge the window in 1 year. Many would have said our first window with Burn et al was a 7, and it's turned out to be a 10

I'm not sure there is an objective numerical answer. Even if we assigned the window a "10" on grounds of (presumably) buying more players and keeping ASM, we wouldn't know whether ASM would have continued to be peripheral (likely in my view given obvious defensive limitations and, to my mind, equally obvious physical limitations) or whether all the signings would have worked out. 

 

I think essentially it all depends on your expectations, which are inevitably tempered by excitement and a steady diet of inaccurate information and boredom with daily life. My expectations and hopes were a bigger squad which was obviously better than last year's vintage and capable of competing on 4 fronts. I'm happy we've achieved 2 of those 3 and it remains to be seen re: the third.

I'd say it's a work in progress, like for any new player.

He's been here since January unlike Lewis Hall who's on loan - he's not even a permanent member of staff.

Where are these 'glaring gaps in the squad' ffs. It's clearly not at LB because we have three of them with a blend of youth and experience. At RW we have Almiron who came off a brilliant season, Gordon who is looking better and better and Murphy.

We just have to show a bit of patience as the build is going to take multiple windows due to FFP. Once new sponsorships, kits makers and other revenue starts to flow, the build will get more and more to where we think it should be.

 

I do fear that will mean selling someone again, but that's the reality of FFP unfortunately.

In the context of the last 15 years, for Newcastle United, it's a 10/10 window.

 

If we rate it against all clubs with no caveats or restrictions, it's less than that, and we should've signed Mbappe.

Also FFP, I don't think it's transfer fees that's affecting us that badly, it's wages also.  I wouldn't be surprised to see another player come in, as much as a pain FFP is, I believe you can go over the limits, just not for 3 years running isn't it ?

 

Leaves more wiggle room than we might think, especially if you know more income is coming.

The good thing is we're set up well for the next few years, with one or two exceptions.

 

It's also going to be a lot easier to convince players to join us now we've made the signings we have. Moving forward I can't imagine many players (certainly not the likes of Lucas Digne) turning us down.

That's a completely different thing though - you're rating the squad there, not the transfer window in isolation.

alternative universe we do a Chelsea and spend a billion quid over a year then win the quadruple this season. It would never be as much fun again due to (a) expectations and (b) what else is there to do?

 

were going to build and compete in every game and every season now, getting better all the time. There’s at least 3-5 years of this before we become as boring as City (being a machine not necessarily the style of play)

I've been thinking about it since being eviscerated by hakka and my own reading of the window is massively clouded by my "FFP is bollocks" stance from last season. I honestly didn't think it would hamstring us so much, especially after finishing fourth, though I do think we're being a bit cautious when compared to other clubs.

 

Heading into the window I expected us to be looking for a right-sided centre-back to challenge Schär, a first-choice left-back to replace Burn, a first-choice central midfielder to replace Longstaff, possibly a younger central midfielder to bring through (Miley has negated this), and a right-winger to challenge Almirón. I thought we'd spend around £150M (net).

 

I was thinking Maxi would stay for another season, but I kept going back and forth over whether he'd leave or not. He's clearly had to leave for FFP reasons and we've still only been able to spend around £93M net, around two-thirds of my expectation while losing a really useful player from the squad.

 

I'm still more than happy with the business done, though I understand the argument that it's a little more "long-term" than people would like when there are some positions in the first XI that are a constant source of frustration. That's why I'd probably settle on an "8" or a "very good", depending on how you'd define it.

 

The recruitment team and leadership team are clearly thinking much more bigger picture than I am, though. They've given me very little reason to doubt them so far and, injury crisis pending, I'm still confident of another superb season despite the increased demands on the squad.

 

Still, a "9" for me would've been Maxi staying in addition to the business done, while a "10" would be a surprise right-winger coming in between now and the deadline that is clearly better than what we've got there, but maybe Miggy and Murphy are planning on making me eat my words again.

 

It's been a good window bearing in mind the FFP restrictions. But as you said, ideally we'd have bought these players and kept Maxi, and also got cover for Schar and someone to compete with Miggy on the right wing. And if we were really being greedy, a specialist defensive midfielder.

 

It is annoying that we aren't allowed to compete with other big clubs because of restrictions which seem to be targetted specifically at us.

Don't know in detail what you guys are discussing as I'm just jumping in on the last page but....

 

He's been here almost 7 months.

 

He's had a longer "pre-season" than anyone else in our squad by playing regularly and reaching the final in the U21 Euros.

 

Those two points you make are simply not valid.
