He was already great when getting up to speed, would’ve gotten even better, and we would still be in the CL if he were playing.

People have ridiculously short memories.

I thought he wasn’t particularly great after the Villa came tbh - don’t think I’m misremembering.  Honestly didn’t think he added more than Longstaff in the games he played.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a much higher ‘ceiling’ than Longstaff, of course.  But he looked a long way from great when I watched him.

Tonali was amazing against Villa then almost exclusively utter shite thereafter. One hopes the very invasive mitigating circumstances were the reason for that and he comes back into the side looking like the player Milan had.

I actually though he had quite a few good games, particularly in the Champions League. It's just the midfield balance was off whenever he played.

Played well vs PSG, was poor vs Milan, didn’t look any better than Longstaff when he came on vs Dortmund, and that was it.  Not sure he would have been the difference between qualifying or not.

I think it's very fair to say we probably didn't see the best out of him given a new league, new system, new language, and the secret looming over him.

But I'm going to dislike him very quickly if he continues to lazily trackback, especially knowing he's genuinely fast based on the UEFA speed data.

Tonali did have some good games and some mediocre. quite hard to rate him in any way based on small sample and his personal dealings in the background. he probably got to find out that shit hits the fan in terms of prosecution. I dont know what he was thinking, maybe getting away from Italy can keep the lid on this mess?

it did seem strange Milan was ok to sell their talisman young Italian midfielder. I bet Milan had a sniff of the upcoming shower of shit and they played us and Tonali played us too unfortuntely which is still a big issue for me.

my worry is that he will become homesick next season and ask for a transfer back to Italy and we get some laughable fee from someone. if that happens its clear he just wanted us to be the losers to spend his ban and fuck us then he returns to Italy.

lets hope its the other option with him becoming a crucial player for us after his ban and repays his transfer fee and some more for the way the club helped him and handles this mess he caused...

I think it may have been against Brighton when Tonali practically gave up for one of the goals ?

Happened in another away game too, can't remember which now.

Fwiw even in pre season he was getting bollockings from Schar and others for not closing down people on the edge of the box.

This - sadly ...

If that happens he will be vilified and rightly so.

I'm far more optimistic though - I think we're going to see a player who is far more comfortable with the language and the system, a huge monkey off his back, and a debt to be repaid to the club, his coaches, and his teammates.

He was a massively mixed bag individually, while the midfield frequently looked imbalanced as a collective with him in there.

He isn't the first player not to grasp what Howe wants from him to begin with and he won't be the last.

I think he’ll be class. He’s clearly technically very strong, he has more speed than anyone else playing centrally and he can attack and defend. He’s also got a fantastic dead ball delivery and will eventually take that on over Trippier. Struggle to see how it doesn’t work out unless there are personal issues or he doesn’t end up feeling settled. He needs to give his absolute all to salvage his career and reputation

The thing with Tonali is that if he was average in all of his performances I wouldn’t be worried as I would put that down to him needing time to adapt to the league and style of football; however, his performances have been the complete polar opposite in some games, from excellent in some to embarrassingly shite in others.

Hopefully it is a language issue and understanding the role asked of him but I do find the mad fluctuations in performances a concern.

I don't think I've watched any of our players this season and thought they were embarrassingly shite, might just be me though.

Not just you. It’s the modern way that players performances are described in extremes. Baffling that so many people struggle to be nuanced.

Nowt wrong with saying he was rubbish, mind. He was, save for his debut and the odd spell. Obviously it's far too hasty to make an overall judgement but I think you'd have to be truly dim to do that anyway.
