Dibling and Evan Ferguson on a loan with option to buy would be absolutely class, but not sure it's very likely!

Would be obligation not option. Only way the selling clubs would be interested.

Looks like we were tenuously linked to Dibling again yesterday. He looks a real talent but he was apparently homesick for Southampton while at Chelsea so I'm not sure we're a goer [emoji38]

Considering his age at the time it's understandable. Turning 19 soon I'm sure he's more up for moving and standing on his own feet.

Targett and Wood were a success in that they helped keep us up

Most of our signings of that season were a success on the pitch, massively so really. Unfortunately the ones still here are rapidly depreciating assets, so thanks to PSR, instead of appreciating that success we are reduced to seeing them as liabilities, even though we could afford to keep them on if we were allowed to buy upgrades.

Agree with @r0cafella

Unless it’s a fabulous deal (like a low release clause) or a free transfer - we need to sign players with resale value.  Like… 90% of players.

Clubs like Arsenal and Spurs rarely sign players without resale value. When they do they are relatively cheap deals for them.

£25 million for Tomori, is absurdly low for a player of that calibre and experience. And he isn't on high wages currently.

Arsenal just did a similar deal for Merino at £30 million. He is 28. Trossard was also 29 when they paid £27 million for him last year.

Spurs just spent £60 million(!!!) on Solanke. He is 27.

Dibling, Evan Ferguson and Chris Rigg should be what we’re targeting. They will cost £100 million but they would be part of our side for the next decade. Similar signings to the Tino/Hall level.

They are the epitome of paying a premium forPL experience though. There's a question mark whether they would even impact results in the near future.

I would say they are a reasonable level, it’s the £70m Marc Guehi’s we should be avoiding. £35 million players are fine, it’s the level below the elite but very high on potential.

Don’t know enough about Tomori to say whether it’s a good deal or not.

I do know that he’s lost his place in the side to the younger Thiaw who many said didn’t look v. good when we were linked.

My memory of Tomori is he’s one of those CBs that doesn’t win his headers - which I personally can’t stand from a CB. They have to be genuinely excellent in other areas to makeup for it imo.

Might still be a deal. But I don’t trust those Milanistas. They sell for a reason.

And he’s Nigerian so I’m taking your advocacy with a grain of salt. You back your boys.

Dean Huijsen Is the one we should have signed in the summer. Went to Bournemouth for £15m in the summer and we were linked. He’s tall, wins a lot of headers, got good pace and decent on the ball. He’s still a bit raw but will turn out to be top class.

On Merino and Solanke.

Merino’s a great fee and probably decent wages.  Most Arsenal fans weren’t delighted by that transfer either as it seemed economically driven.

The Solanke deal looks like a luxury signing for Spurs aye. But the vast majority of their signings are done with resale value in mind. And Spurs have zero PSR issues. They pay less than 50% of revenue to wages. Ours is close to 80%. We have totally different financial positions.

Okay, but that's a different conversation, if you don't know him well or rate him personally, because you don't think he's strong in the air.

We have already looked at a similar type of defender in Guehi, so it doesn't appear to be a concern for Howe and his team.

What we were discussing was the whole resale value thing.

And so I just shared examples from Arsenal and Spurs, the two clubs you mentioned.

Do we envision going into next season with someone like Huijsen starting alongside Botman though?

Or are you thinking we roll out Schar again in that position?

Aye yeh I’m not averse to the odd signing with no resale value.  Just needs to make sense. But it has to be an exception.

We would be in a better position to know if we had spent a small sum bringing him to be understudy for a season with aim of forcing his way into the team...

In my opinion Guehi is a better footballer than Tomori but obs a lot more expensive, do you envision flipping Tomori in a couple of seasons? If so then you need the replacements on the radar now not when you are about to do the deals

I just think that for players that aren't the finished article it's a lot of money with no real guarantee they will make much difference to results. Good prospects maybe, but you'd probably pay half for similar players from abroad.

Yeah, that's all I was saying. Absolutely should be for the odd signing, if the recruitment team and manager rate the player and they can be had for really good value.

That's literally the same mould of signings we're already making. No thanks. We need players to elevate us to the next level. £100M on potential isn't elevating us to the next level.

I genuinely believed Ferguson had the potential to be right up there but his drop has been massive, still interested to see how he ends up but I would view it as risk now

At the moment we can't drop big fees on potential.

It's either decent money on current ability (eg. Bruno, Botman, potentially someone like Tomori), someone that can come in and improve the starting XI straight away or you look in the sub-£15m market in the hope of either unearthing a gem or someone who can develop into that. If one of the big boys then want to give us £50m+ for one of those talents after a year or two, we accept it and look for the next one.

It's frustrating, but short of a substantial increase in revenue, that's the way we're going to have to play it.

Why on earth would Southampton ever do that deal?

Question for me is , Wilson knackered, Isak occasionally so, where do we go from here, transfers wise .

Said before it's a tough one when you have one stand-out option but you really need quality backup \ alternatives... Spurs had it for years with Kane, us to a lesser extent with Shearer but most teams played two up front which helped with that one.

Without the big club reputation and less fixtures it's hard single out a target but I do like the Liverpool options and the way they have built and refreshed their forward line recently and that is tough for me to admit as I am no lover of Liverpool...

Yeah he looked fantastic a year ago but he seemed to score all his goals in one game against us.

Even our current signings of that ilk like Hall and Tino are still not the finished article, Hall is making defensive mistakes, and Tino is not providing effective overlaps. I am pleased we signed them, but it's a lot of money to pay for half baked players no matter how promising. I think with PSR restrictions we have to make future signings like that from abroad where we will get better value and potentially a bigger upside.
