A bit on how the financial situation is coming along.

If thats true, I dont really mind another window of no spend, as that would open up the summer which is way better to do business in.

My only caution would be that if another player (RW) could come in, would that strengthen our case for 5th or above this season as that really would make a massive difference on a number of levels.

Tough one.

Not losing anyone and getting in some high ceiling youth would work for me, especially when you see how quickly tino and hall have come on.

“They project commercial revenue – which is driven by a new sponsorship deal with Sela and the tie-ups with Adidas, Fenwicks and In Post – to rise to £64.3m from £46m.”

That’s an almost 40% increase year on year. Remember a few people recently calling me mad for suggesting we would continue to increase commercial revenue by the targeted 30% minimum.

it’s going to take time, but there is no doubt this club is moving in the right direction, both on and off the pitch.

Plus there a few out of contract in the summer so we need to see how that plays out as well.

And same goes for players out of contract at other clubs. Lots of very good free signings to be made this summer.

That being said, if we can spend £30-£50M this January to really try and finish 5th or higher then that will make the summer much easier for us.

One for our Irish fans.

Newcastle United complete deal for winger in January breakthrough as rivals beaten to transfer

The Magpies have won the race for an Irish whizz-kid who they believe can go all the way on Tyneside

Newcastle United will unveil an exciting new signing on January 28 after completing a move for Irish whizz-kid Kyle Fitzgerald.

The teenager will arrive on his 18th birthday to sign a professional contract with the Magpies before joining the Under-21 set-up. Chronicle Live understands the deal for left-winger Fitzgerald is complete, and his move will be confirmed later this month.

Already capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth level, Fitzgerald is believed to be highly-rated by the Magpies and deemed a player they see with a genuine pathway to the first-team. But he will use the early part of 2025 to settle in on Tyneside.

As reported by Chronicle Live last summer, Fitzgerald won his move to Newcastle after impressing on trial. The club are believed to have beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton & Hove Albion to Murphy's signature.

If by easier you mean we’d then probably need to scamble around to sell a first team player before June 30 then it probably would.

Perfectly happy to go with what we’ve got and focus on bringing in academy players, plus replace whomever we sell if the price is right obviously.

This is the kind of deal I hope we do plenty of this month :indi:

Did I read there's a 90% chance 5th gets champs lge this season due to English co-efficient ranking. Maybe should factor into our planning if so

Over 97% I read somewhere. Not sure it should affect our planning seeing as we no doubt will aim to finish as high as possible.

I'm not suggesting spending £50M this month without any outgoings. We'd need Miggy and one other (Wilson/Targett/Trippier) out to even start considering spending that amount.

Qualifying for Champions League next year will make our summer business alot less difficult.

In the short term we’d need to adhere to even more stringent FFP rules. Long term I agree qualifying for CL will unlock additional commercial revenue and prize money that will allow us to continue to progress hopefully.

Must have a link with Galway Utd, that's where we got Murphy from too.

About 98% so only a couple more wins for English teams which will happen you'd have thought. Liverpool alone will get it over the line.

"That is a record high but, for comparison, Manchester United’s most recent commercial revenue was £302.9m – which shows just how far Newcastle have to go to catch them up.

Matchday revenue, meanwhile, is predicted to be £40m – again, a new high but also less than half of the Red Devils’ £100m plus figure.

While commercial revenues have also ballooned thanks to Adidas deals and Champions League participation, that is largely driven by a huge profit on player trading.

That continues to apply now, with Newcastle sources suggesting any incomings will need to be offset by some outgoings to ensure they don’t face another scramble at the start of the summer to comply with PSR."

It's good but it's not enough. The revenue we have requires sales to fund new signings.

My point stands - unless we significantly increase our revenues. We will need to sell our best players in an attempt to improve the squad. We need £100m of recurring revenue.

What you say is obvious. The point is, if we increase our commercial revenue >30% year on year, and our competitors don’t*, we’ll catch up, and sooner than you might think (law of compound interest**).

* For reference here is Man U’s commercial revenue development for the period 2014-2023:

**They are essentially flat-lining for the last 8 years. They keep doing that, we overtake them within 6-7 years.

Quite frankly I am at a loss with the impatience of some of you. I’d have donated my left bollock five years ago to be where we are today, with an ambitious owner, a team that had some genuinely world class players and huge progress being made in all areas of the club. Plus we’re doing it the right way, as opposed to say PSG. I’m loving life as a NUFC fan at the moment. Yet here we are. Even a 40% increase of commercial revenue compared to last year gets shot down.

Edit: all that before even touching upon the obvious restrictions put in place to stop us doing what others have done before to give them a huge head start.

I'm not impatient. I'm perfectly happy to have 7th highest revenues forever and try our best with that.

But when we have to sell our best players, or barely improve the squad in future windows, I won't moan or cry, I'll take it on the chin because that's what our financial position has been heading towards. I'll expect you to do the same.

Mate, I've been advocating selling and re-investing to accelerate our growth, and explaining that we cannot continue to spend like we have done as some seemed to think, for well over a year.

I did some more digging on the commercial revenue growth rate. It stands at 42% year on year (starting 2022 their first full year and presuming the 2024 forecast is correct). At that rate, it will develop as such:

  • 2025: 96m
  • 2026: 146m
  • 2027: 220m
  • 2028: 333 (more than Man U currently)
  • 2029: 504 (more than Man City currently)

Good enough for you..?

Great signs of growth and why PIF consider it a long term project. Amanda turbo charged the club following takeover, but clearly that model wasn’t sustainable and where now going through a period of adjustment.

Agree patience needed but we’ll get there with continued growth and smart investment, the stadium project will be massive when its announced.

The issue with those projections is that we've already picked the low-hanging fruit with Adidas and Sela. They're the big-ticket items.

That uptick from £46m to £64m is impressive, but it's going to be hard enough to find another £18m to match that growth, nevermind an additional £32m to take us to your 2025 projection.

It will be hard, but that's why we've hired one of the best commercial directors in world football. Qualifying for CL, retaining the likes of Isak, Bruno and Tonali and generally growing our worldwide fanbase will be massive. The club's objective is 30& annual growth, so they have been overperforming significantly. I don't see why a 30% increase would be unrealistic as our profile keeps growing.
