Yeah you’re right. You would amortise all up front costs to the transfer:

 

Agent fees

Sign on fee

Legal fees

 

For a free transfer these can easily be between £5M-£10M.

Does anyone know how this works when there's an option year? If it's 4 + 1 year club option for example, I'd presume it's amoritised over 4 years until it's confirmed the option's been activated, at which point whatever's left goes over the rest of the contract?

I imagine it will be closer to 5 than 10.

Yes, you’re correct here. It’s just a change in accounting estimate.
