I know there’s obvious (and somewhat deserved) negativity around at the moment but the last three league games we’ve lost, we haven’t actually been behind at the 85 min mark. Yes, games last 90+ mins etc, and everything team can say if we’d just done X, Y and Z to justify poor performance, but if you’re a poor team that has no chance of getting any points, you’re not still constantly in the game at 85 mins. I take your point but when you concede so many late goals over a season as well as chuck away draws/wins over a huge sample size of games it isn't a coincidence or bad luck - it's a pattern. If it's 0-0 on Saturday on 85 minutes you'll be able to see what's coming a mile off.

We’ve played a lot more games this season where we haven’t conceded at 85+, than games where we have. Doing it three games in a row has just (understandably) distorted everyone’s feelings. So what you’re saying is that ‘tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. But at the end of the day, with either option, you’re still sat at home all alone watching the 15 mins of Babestation freeview and wanking into a sock. I can't find any stats for after 85+, but we've conceded 19 after 76 minutes, which as you can imagine is (comfortably) a league high. You're right we've played more games without conceding late than we have, but we're still awful at it.

It isn't inevitable but I'd argue it's quite likely for sure. That goes for any of the 5 games left, it's got to the point where a 1 goal cushion just isn't enough for us, whether there's 80, 45 or 3 minutes left. But if something doesn’t happen more often than it does, surely it can’t be “quite likely”? *obviously we both know it’s not that clear cut and there’s obviously other factors in play. TheEntertainer
It's a vicious circle I think, the team knows we keep dropping points by conceding late, so they get nervous late and drop back to try and hold onto what they have and hand all of the initiative to the opposition which then results in another late goal and added nerves and pressure. It needs a run of games where we actually keep playing at the end of games to break, but that seems very unlikely at the minute.

Yes by definition you are correct I won't argue there. We'll meet in the middle and I'll say given the recent games and what seems to have become a common pattern over the season, I think there's a very decent chance we will concede a late goal to lose/draw a game in the next 5. I also reckon there's a *very decent* chance we go a goal up and lose in the last 5 games at some point.

I agree there’s more chance of that (if still not inevitable) as, without being arsed to look at the numbers, that feels like it’s happened more frequently than conceding late. I was actually interested to know that myself but can't find the data. I still think 16 goals after 85 minutes is a frequent amount mind I know it's not a majority but it's a canny chunk of our total goals conceded in the league. Most valid comparison to make is probably against goals conceded in other ‘10 minute’ periods (assuming there is usually around 5 mins of added time). Then, if the 16 conceded looks excessive, you should compare to other teams to see if it is just us or it is common for teams to concede a disproportionate number of their goals late on. Fuck it I’m interested now, might have to feed my numbers habit!

TheEntertainer
Our conceded stat in the last 10 minutes is the highest number of any 10 minute segment for any team in the league it seems alongside Burnley. Heady company.

After a (very) quick swizz on NUFC.com, and including Welbeck (84) and Thiago (83) in the figures, I make it 9 late goals that have changed the result (negatively) of a PL match this season. Too many, far, far too many really, but still only 9 out of 33.
