Your theory is absolutely correct.

However it looks so densely packed (at least from 9th-20th) that it could just end up being a bit of a lottery as to how difficult your playoff opponent is.

I've not really studied the intricacies of it all, but by the sounds of it, rules are there to benefit the big boys, as usual.  Although I like the fact that a higher league position means it's easier (!?) on paper, in the next round.

Not really.

It benefits doing well throughout the competition (on paper).

And Liverpool finished top and ended up with PSG.

Who had a low seed because they finished low in the group stage.

The eventual winners won the R16 on penalties.  When has that happened?

It was an unlucky draw for Liverpool. But it was a suitably tough draw for PSG who finished low in the league. PSG had to win the CL going away from home second legs from R16 - again due to poor performance in the league.

Theres going to be exceptions. But generally finishing higher is going to give you the easiest path. Finishing lower will give you a tougher path.

Home or away end tomorrow @Wallsendmag? Remember the home game against PSV in QF years ago and all hell broke loose outside the Gate when their lads walked by?

Always entertaining when the Dutch teams come to Town.

I'm in the away end tomorrow mate. NUFC made the decision for me tbh as I failed in the ballot. Just had enough loyalty points to get tickets in the away end before it sold out.

Got an email yesterday off PSV saying we need to go to the Slug and Lettuce between 10.30-17.30 tomorrow to pick up our tickets. They are very strict for Euro away ganes. They already have everyone's photo on their database on what's known as an electronic "away card" and they email you a voucher which they'll scan at the pub, and then on further production of ID they'll exchange the voucher for a ticket.

Decent bit of business for the pub as well!

Suspect this will be the future of our away games going forward. Although presumably at lot easier to implement for European as generally everyone is in the area in good time.

Do they do that for domestic aways?

Domestic aways they've always had to go on a "traincombi" or "buscombi" where basically your bus/train and match ticket is combined and that's the only way you can get into the away end. Physically impossible to travel ny your own methods and gain entry to the ground. Away teams do that at PSV as well. The train station platform has a tunnel which connects it directly to the away end at the Philips Stadion so in over 20 years of travelling over there I've never seen an away fan outside the ground or having a drink in the city centre other than for European games.

They were talking about relaxing the rules but there's been a bit of a spike in football hooliganism in the Netherlands this season so that might go on the backburner for a bit.

I think Howe will freshen up the side a little here. Not what I would go for but this is what I think he will play.

Think he might go

                 Pope

Trippier Thiaw Botman Hall

                 Bruno

    Miley/Ramsey   Joelinton

Elanga                  Gordon

                Wissa

Think he'll keep Tonali as a defensive sub if we need to see out the game and Barnes as his impact sub if we need a goal. He won't leave out Joelinton as he trusts him and likes his defensive height.

But think he will want Ramsey or Miley in there.

Personally I'd probably have Gordon as the impact sub not Barnes as if we're winning his pace could be more useful against tiring legs. But history tells us it will be Barnes benched.

Right then, those knuckkedusters, where were they, bloody sure they were under the wife's furry handcuffs. There's a thought, is the baseball bat still in the garage?
