After more than a decade since my last post...

What do Jan 2, Jan 16, Jan 23, Feb 16 and March 2 have in common? By my reckoning those are the only days so far this year it's been possible for Eddie to do a full training session with the whole squad.

If you look at this article, you'll see that match day -1 is light, focused on tactics for the upcoming match, and match day +1 is active recovery. Then players expect a day a week (if possible) to see their families. That leaves just five days so far this year to work on things with the whole squad outside the immediate demands of recovery or the next match. But after the international break that changes. There's three whole days a week to train between matches. That's more time than we got in February and March combined.

So - you're the coach. What do you work on?

I was wondering about this before tbh. How do other teams with the fixture congestion we have manage it.

Most of those are the scummy six, so bigger squads, more wages from years of extra advantage. Cunts basically.

On this topic, I am genuinely excited for what we might bring to the Palace game. First time since Liverpool at home in our second game of the season on 25 August that we'll have had a full week of training before a match.

A slightly bigger squad and a settled team must help. I've read a lot of interviews where pros talk about being able to play three games a week as the real mark of a top class player. Probably explains why some players look great at a mid table club but can't handle the step up. (Or take a year or two to adjust?)

It's an additional advantage that seems incredibly difficult to overcome. The mainstays have the revenue to afford the depth to compete on all fronts and everyone else has to choose where to be competitive. Quite the level fucking playing field we've got here.

Bigger/deeper squads with useful academies to fill in

More players used to doing it

Possession based games which involve less chasing about

Ability to thump opponents and kill games early (this is now much more difficult in the modern PL than even 2 years ago)

Less fucking ludicrous cup draws that don't involve playing Man City once a month

You basically need several years of CL qualification on the spin in order to build the revenue and the appeal in order to have a squad that is capable of both qualifying year on year and actually competing when you get there. It's incredibly difficult as a club like Villa or Newcastle to qualify and not be wiped out by the schedule the next year.

Does make clear what an easy ride going out of the cups and not being in Europe has given Man U this season. Maybe five times as much time to train on the pitch, players properly rested. Curious what'll happen to them next season or if they're now yo-yoing like us and Villa.
