Look, the problem with Leazes Terrace is natural light yeah ? Where does that come from......The Sun, so all we have to do is move The Sun to the other side and voila, problem solved.

We'll have to wait until its night though as it gets hot during the day.

Leazes Park Stadium would be fantastic, the John Hall plans wanted exactly that until the nimbys got in.

However, an expanded St James' Park would be (for me) light years better.

Now that we have the owners who (uniquely) can optimise the SJP expansion, I will always want that.

It will be amazing, different (as now really) from anywhere else in England.

The NIMBYs trawled for signatures in sunderland, too.  The cunts.

The issue with the Gallowgate remains the same regardless of the funds available to the owners.  It is a potentially insurmountable task to extend the Gallowgate to any substantial degree - a civil and structural engineering nightmare.  The risks - not only cost-based ones - would be a nightmare.  I suspect a move will be the only option for any kind of substantial increase in capacity.  The site is a fucking nightmare, basically - blocked by listed building on one side and likely blocked by the Metro station on the other.  I can't see how the structure to expand the Gallowgate can be safely built.

Even back in the days of the Fred's they said it was structurally possible to extend the gallowgate but not financially viable at that time.

Is it not possible to completely excavate/rebuild the metro station into new foundations?  Would cost a fortune like.

You'd have to do something like that tbf.  The stand extension would need huge pile foundations and even their installation could cause substantial damage to the station and line - assuming of course that they are even able to avoid the station at all.

Removing the Metro - even temporarily - would make it more feasible, as it could be possible to build across Strawberry Place leaving the road intact (if temporarily closed).  The slope at Gallowgate makes it all the more fun :)

They talked of it - but that doesn't mean it was possible.  You'd need to span the structure over Strawberry Place.  Which would mean that the piles would be coming directly through the roof of the current Metro station.

I suppose one question would be - do you even need a SJP Metro station?

(Can you tell I'm from the west end?)

So am I.

Remember that land was earmarked for several office blocks until our owners bought it. We're they going to have 4ft foundations ?

Just buy more of them lights they use to grow the pitch and shine em at people's windows on a timer.

So the nimbys blocked the planned new stadium when Hall was the owner and yet you think developing St.James's is light years better?

Logically, then (in your book). the nimbys were the good guys as they blocked the new stadium in favour of extending the existing stadium.

A lot of these so-called nimbys were against the plans back then because the club wanted to retain St.James's Park (albeit reduced) AND build a new stadium. Concrete and steel overkill - the park would have been reduced to a green corridor between two overbearing stadia.

No, because the offices weren't going to be built on top of the Metro station (see link).  Even if they were (they definitely weren't), the office block foundations would be on the building footprint - the stadium foundations would be structural piles underneath the steel columns.  The weight distribution would be completely different from that of an office block.

The stadium expansion is a civil engineering project; the office blocks an architectural one.  The foundations aren't built in the same way even if they were both a level greenfield site.

Their tactics were tiresome in the extreme, and they came across as NIMBYs.  And canvassing in sunderland was fucking disgraceful.

You are right that the plan was to maintain SJP for rugby etc - John Hall's 'sporting club' stuff was still rumbling on.

Aye, turning up at Joker Park to get signatures was fucking beyond low. They used to get pelters when standing at greys monument.

If I recall correctly they even had the gall to object to the expansion of SJP due to increased traffic. They we’re basically NIMBYs with a few genuine tree huggers amongst them.

I think it was raised somewhere on here that it serves a purpose as a terminus and allows trains to change tracks.  Not sure whether Manors has the same facility or not and could be used as a substitute?

And if you remember back pre Ashley when their were tentative plans for a hotel and casino linked on to an extended Gallowgate, everyone said it was doable, that included engineers etc but cost prohibitive and we've had nearly 20yrs of progress since then.

Wouldn’t it be great having two huge football stadiums sitting next to each other for a while!

Dunno, if we were to move up to Castle Leazes/Leazes Park I'd like the current SJP footprint to he a green space.
