Not sure why people filming stuff has any relevance to the stadium we play in mind. Some proper pearl clutching stuff going on   

 

We can thank social media, camera phones, celebrity culture for the Increased prevalence of it. 
 

It’s only going to become more and more widespread as well as the generations to come engage with football in very different ways than those who came before.

Just watched the YouTube video of Oasis Knebworth 96 (Sunday) last night. I was there. Not a camera phone in sight. Living in the moment, no distractions. Halcyon daze!

In the Other Games thread it was quite rightly pointed out how embarrassing it was that Man Utd fans were getting selfies with Spurs players after they got rinsed y’day

 

It was also suggested that a new stadium would mean we would get the same doylem behaviour 

However, the camera obsessed doylems filming for socials rather than supporting the team already get their hands on tickets and walk amongst us in our current home 

 

We got a vital pelanty, they watch it through a phone

I’m hoping a new ground with more tickets allows a lot of legacy fans the chance to get hold of ballot tickets rather than just these quilts with their social media culture.

I’m not keen on it either but it’s quite clear the writing has been on the wall in this regard for a long time and I’m not sure how staying at SJP isolates us from this, it’s not like old Trafford is a brand spanking new stadium now is it?

 

Would people rather be absolutely shit and have no day trippers or be successful and have some?

There's at least 30k people in there, every week, sat on their hands. Week in week out. 

Season ticket holders. Locals. "True fans" 

It's not "tourists" causing the silence and we're not "the best fans in the world" 

That's bullshit. We are very very good when we're on it. Probably the best. But far too often we need the team, or the ref, to give it a boost. Probably the main factor in the demise of ground atmosphere, across the board, is all seating stadia. Added to that is seats, permanently, occupied by season ticket holders who've sat there for decades. Added to that are, aforementioned, season ticket holders who've sat there throughout the Ashley years when the life and soul of "the crowd" was crushed. 

 

 

The camera malarkey is just the way it is now. I couldn't be arsed but I'm 60.

Ps PSG game was, and will probably remain, unrivalled in how fantastic you lot were. On that night, at least, you were the best in the world. Still full of "tourists", as well 😉

Like the Viz, football crowds are not as good as they used to be

 

The atmosphere at SJP hasn’t been great for a long time.  As someone who no longer goes, I have to say that I actually think there’s been a clear marked improvement over the last couple of years.  But the real atmosphere went with all-seater stadiums and the ticket prices going through the roof three decades ago.  Our average crowds doubled between 1991 and 1993 - and they weren’t bringing an atmosphere with them

 

Watching a game from behind a phone makes my teeth itch, mind.  Put the fucking thing down and enjoy the experience, you soppy cunts - literally no-one cares about the footage you’re recording

Aye Leazes was excellent in 93/94. My ST was in the Upper tier (L4U) and it was brilliant in there. You had the East Corner which would be bouncing then at the other side you had the Leazes Section of the Milburn Stand which was superb  back then and the Leazes would always join in with them.

 

The following season they shifted all the vocal fans from the NE Corner and shoved the away fans in there which killed it a lot and to compound things they fucked the other side of the stand up as well as they kicked all the vocal fans out of the Leazes Wing of the Milburn Stand to introduce the Platinum Club.

 

Then in 2000 the extension happened and that killed the noise completely. I persevered with it for 5 more years but then switched to the Gallowgate which was better but not a patch on the Leazes when it was first built.

 

Agree that mirroring the Gallowgate with the Leazes will be the end of what atmosphere there is left.

The singing sections in level 7 were great. Like an away end most weeks. Rest of the ground used to look down their noses at them though. Now I keep reading there is a lack of young lads etc

Think people remember the pre all seater days with rose tinted spectacles mind. It was shite more often that not. 14k of us rattling around the place most weeks in 90/91 was pretty grim and it was only the rare occasion for a big game when it was really good. An FA Cup game v Man Utd in 1990, a League Cup game v Forest also stands out, obviously any games v the Mackems. West Ham was usually lively after the petrol bomb incident as well.

 

Keegan coming in 92 changed things and the atmosphere improved 10 fold culminating in the final game of that season v Portsmouth which is still my favourite ever SJP atmosphere and it wasn't full either. Just under 26k there but it was absolutely electric. Remember David Kelly in his post match interview saying one of the Portsmouth players had gone up to him during the game and said he couldn't believe the noise inside the place!

 

The start of the following season was also excellent but died off a bit when they decided to make every match all ticket after 7k were locked out v Tranmere.

In all honesty I think most atmosphere-based memories are rose tinted.  Just like most football games are unmemorable, so are most atmosphere.  There never was a time where there was a broiling atmosphere all the time.

A lot of the memorable moments for me are people groaning and having a go at the home players. 
 

SJP has been a very difficult place to play for shit home teams.

There were some excellent atmospheres that season.

Wasn't there but have really strong memories of that game. Think it might've been the first time I felt fully 'in' again after the takeover. Would've died if Miggy's curling effort had found the top corner.
